Beyond Planet Earth

I believe most of people used to have dream to travel in space once in a life time to explore new things, to get exciting experience, to try living in a zero-gravity environment (Weightlessness), to see nice scenery of beautiful planets and stars, to know whether there are aliens or not and so on. Even though it seemed to be impossible now, the advent of new advanced space technology in the future would fulfill our dream someday.

According to “What will Pluto mission discover?” (Ghosh, 2015), the spacecraft New horizons has flew by Pluto to discover new details about its surface, chemical components, its moons and etc., and this mission will expect to help reveal new information and answer many questions or doubts about it, especially for a controversial decision on whether Pluto could become a planet again. What New Horizons will do is to probe, gather the data, and send all back to the scientists; however, it takes a very long time to wait for the data because of a few watts of power in its transmitter and very long distances—a billions of kilometers.

This news made many people around the world interested and excited in the new information of Pluto; however, some of them were wondering if space exploration such as the mission of New horizon, Apollo 11 (Moon landing) etc. is worth the cost. Moreover, others would like to know what the benefits of the missions are. Certainly, there are two sides of opinion about those questions, while it is also hard to judge or totally support for only one side because each view has its own interesting lines of reasoning (multifaceted point of view).

On the one hand, regardless of other important nation's problems, i.e. poverty, welfare, food shortage etc., several countries have been spending a great deal of budget (several billion dollars) studying and exploring space. Most of the critics point out that money is being wasted in space; sometimes mission failed and resulted in loss of resources used for spacecrafts along with astronaut’s lives. Why explore? Remaining dubious, what we really got after completing missions like Moon landing is one of the questions of some opponents; perhaps, such action is just to show nation’s greatness. In other words, it seemed that we got a few merits in some missions—superficial knowledge compared to a lot of money spent. Besides, multiplicity of satellites and spacecrafts which ended of life has become space garbage around any outside parts of the Earth. Meanwhile, launching rocket to space could affect the earth's atmosphere also.

On the other hand, others such as some scientists and researchers regarded it as helping expand our imagination and bring about new advanced technology being able to apply for our better world. Understanding astronomy's phenomenon clarifies the secret of nature and acquires new useful knowledge. It can easily imagined that if the projects of space exploration, study along with research and their benefits had not existed—especially for the existence of satellites—nowadays we would have not good living and modern life. One clear benefit of satellite technology is that meteorology and geology is so advanced that human can predict weather more accurately, warning us possible natural disasters. Another advantage is the fact that current modern communication technology resulted from the application of satellites. In the long run, we might be necessary to move to other planets due to the lack of resources or severely extreme climate change. At that time we would greatly appreciate our missions in space having been doing so far.

I, myself, think that the great development of our world is a part of the consequences of space exploration and related technology. Do you think so?

  1. I am in the side of sending spacecraft exploring the new world, I like everything that can proof or show it is true or not, not just imagine or believe it. Before this mission people think Pluto has no moon and the orbit is different from other planets, so the scientist kick the Pluto out of the planet in our solar system(before 2006 the solar system has 9 planets) and make it to dwarf planet. I remembered that one reason to change Pluto to dwarf is it has no moon, to be a planet use to have moon. Then, I do not know Pluto will change to be a planet again or not because we discover it has moon, and this proof that we were wrong about the moon in Pluto.

    1. I enjoyed Ter's comment for a couple of reasons. First, he insists, as I do, that we have good reasons for our beliefs, that our opinions be well supported with solid evidence, not the weak and largely worthless "It's my opinion." We already know it's your opinion, but that does not normally make any interesting opinion true. In my opinion, Ter is right to want something more solidly supporting than repeating that some idea is also your opinion. If I say, "There are 22 people in this room now," we immediately know (unless we think you are joking or lying) that it is your opinion that there are 22 people in the room now.

I also liked Ter's comment on the status of Pluto as a planet, a question which depends on the agreed definition of the word planet: when the definition of planet changed a few years ago, Pluto was, as Ter points out demoted from planet to dwarf planet. Will it now be promoted back to planet? (I think not - and you?)

    2. Before long this mission would reveal more something—reliable evidence and information—new and exciting about Pluto. At that time, we would know whether it should become to a planet again or not. So, the current statement that Pluto now is not a planet would be just an opinion as long as scientists are waiting for collecting myriad pictures about Pluto as new significant information to make that statement become a fact. And I hope to hear the fact about this soon.

Thank you for your useful comments

  2. From my point of view, Space explorer project is needed in order to provide answer for some question and new information about other planet which we may use to adapt and adjust to our planet. So, I think It's ok for a country to invest in space project as long as the government have subsidize enough the education and health care system.

    1. Ice, I think so too.

Actually, Thailand should support the study and research in the field of astronomy more than the past’s so as to help develop the country in several aspects; nevertheless, it also seemed to have various big constraints. The space research and study does spend high amount of money and also requires many specialists in this area.

Even if Thailand still does not make a great progress in that research like other developed countries, it should keep the vision of this for potential development in the future. Similarly, it should not spend too much budget for this study and research since there are still a lot of urgent, significant problems to be coped with such as poverty, education etc.

      Thanks Ice for your comments
