Ice bucket challenge: What's happened since?

Do you remember that many people made their videos which having a bucket of cold water poured over their head, and uploaded on Facebook last summer? Do you think people really understand the meaning of this activity or just because of fun and trendy? Does anyone concern about that what is happened since?

According to" Ice bucket challenge: What's happened since?" (2015), we can know motor neurone disease (MND) is a disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, so people locked in a failing body, unable to move, talk and eventually, breathe and there is no cure. Plus, what is happened after Ice bucket challenge in the USA and the UK.

There are many opinions from many people as far as I know. On one hand, some people consider that Ice bucket challenge is a positive activity for following reasons: First, Ice bucket challenge is really raised money for helping people who is suffering from MND. Moreover, there are more people who pay their attention  for MND people that it is make MND patients and their family feel that they are not lonely. Finally, more people will learn the knowledge about what is MND, and included the other related diseases which is not commonly known.

On the other hand, the other individuals have different viewpoints of Ice bucket challenge for following points : First of all, some people think that Ice bucket challenge wastes of water. Especially there lacking of water in some area last summer. Secondly, certain patients family claim that they are feeling offended for the activity because some people who shared their video are not really want to support MND but just for fun or trendy. Lastly, there are some individuals doubt about use of donated funds is not clear.

I personally consider that it is a positive activity, but people seem to focus on MND for just a period of time, but BBC News remind us that Ice bucket challenge brings how a successful achievement for charity. It might encourage more people to concentrate on charity continuously. In addition, we can see that social network such as Facebook, shows a effective power to make something happen. When I read this BBC News that remind me that my goal is to be a dance therapist, and I might be working with some people who need support from society, such as autistic, depression and cerebral palsy. That is why I choose this topic.

  1. I enjoyed reading Joyce's reminder of the past with my morning coffee. I had quite forgotten about the ice bucket challenge. In fact, it's the first time I learned what the purpose behind it was. I had thought it was just another weird trend like planking (remember that one - very popular in Thailand to the annoyance of the anti-culture controllers in the Ministry of Culture), yo yos and other fads. Now I know that what looked weird was well motivated by a desire to help others. Two of the things I love in my home are air conditioning to keep my home pleasantly cool and a water heater to make my showers pleasantly warm. The chance of my ever taking hte ice bucket challenge was never more than approximately 0.0.

  2. It seems like Ice Bucket Challenge was a controversail issue for a while, I think people interested in it because the social trend after many celebrities such as actors, actresses, models joined this campaign, but only few people tried to seek more infomation about MND, however, it is undeniable that this trend helped to increase a helping fund and grab attentions from peopole around the world, in a future, I believe that there will be some public campign which follow this way too.

    1. Hi Ling

I am not sure what is the real motivation of those celebrities, maybe they just want to show they are really concern about charity or they would like to be more famous. But it still a positive thing if some people have the power to inference more society doing some beneficial things.

  3. In Thailand, many people viewed Ice bucket as a fun activity, and they did without understanding the real aim of Ice bucket. Those people just did because of current social trend, celebrities, and fun. However, like what you mentioned, people have different point of views about Ice bucket—both positive and negative views. Personally, I would not like to focus on what their opinions are, but I wonder who get really benefits from this activity.

Your post is interesting and provides me different aspects about Ice bucket that I have questioned many things regarding it.

    1. I thought the planking trend a few years ago was more fun: people showed lots of creativity in thinking of places to do it. It was a bit silly, but I don't think silly means bad, and the weird response of some government authorities, as though young people were suddenly becoming demons or something, was very funny to watch, if a little depressing that any Ministry of Culture today could so amazingly fail to understand what culture is. Perhaps they need an AEP class focussing on the definition of the word culture.

  4. Ice bucket challenge is a good way to advertise people to have knowledge, care, and concentrate to the MND person. For me, it does not matter that some person did not know that this challenge is a charity or just for fun, but it was work to encourage people about this disease by using social media because most of people have a knowledge about MND which is the way that the challenge want to be.

  5. It's good that there is someone who keep up the project because I think most people, even the people who accept the challenge at that time, almost forget this problem.

  6. As everything have two sides: pros and cons in the same of this charity campaign. It might be the most succeed donation have found ever since. Firstly, I also enjoyed about many clips of the challenge. Then, there're news of the severe failed of ice bucket players and waste water awareness, remind me such the negative side.
By the way, I hope that this charity is helpful to all patients (not only MND) and give them motivation.
