Psychological disorders and social stigma. Quest 2, p. 176, x.C., 4 - 5

Rather than do Hartmann's discussion questions on page 176 (2007) of Quest, we are going to do them as response writing activities.

Now, questions 4 - 5, which we are also treating as one response writing prompt:

  • Do you know of any famous people who suffered from a psychological disorder? If so, who were they? Do you know what disorder they had?
  • Do you think that there are fewer stignas against people with psychological disorders than in the past? Among whom? Why?
Respond to these prompts in one comment below.

  1. The first famous person who came to my mind was Vincent van Gogh, who painted the picture on page 165 of Quest that we wrote about last week. He painted it when he in a mental hospital, and he committed suicide shortly after.

Another famous person is Alan Turing, the mathematical genius who helped the US and England defeat Germany in World War 2. Turing was severely stigmatised and suffered great harm from the immoral social opinion and immoral laws against homosexuality at the time, but his problem was not being gay. That the great majority of people at the time thought homosexuality was a psychological disorder and morally wrong merely proves that society was morally wrong. Turing's real problem was his autism, which made it very difficult for him to communicate easily with other people.

And that reminds me of Isaac Newton, the even more brilliant mathematician and scientist whose work was foundation of modern physics until Einstein came along, and whose calculus and other mathematical discoveries are still fundamental to our understanding of that field.

Out of time to do Nietzsche, and I'm not sure that Plato doesn't also belong on this list of famous people with psychological disorders - he also seems to me to have had problems relating to others in a normal, healthy way, but at a distance of 2,400 years, it's difficult to be sure. Some of the Roman emperors, however, were clearly insane - schizophrenic at the very least.

    1. It is unfortunate that all of these well-known persons seem to have a psychological disorder. Personally, I feel pity with Alan Turing, he did a lot of useful works which helped millions of British people, I just know that homosexuality is actually not his problem. A genius is able to have some psychological problems also.

    2. When I watched 'The Imitation Game', I suddenly knew that Alan Turing faced some difficulties in his mind and this affected to the ways he respond to others. However, it seems like the movie tried to tell us that Turing kill himself because a problem of homosexual issue, I just got a new infomation from you that It was not a suicide cause.

    3. It seems that everyone—talented guys, brilliant guys, famous guys and so on—can face with psychological disorder. As far as I remember, one article of Quest I read in this week mentions major depression which many people like Abraham Lincoln, Queen Victoria etc. suffer from too. I feel that psychological problems have become disorders that people should be careful because sometimes people do not realize that they are encountering with them and do not try to find ways to treat them. Instead, people neglect them until they cause many serious problems such as suicide, crime, and the like.

  2. Yes. I've heard that Lindsay Lohan, famous actress from Disney channel, had faced an anorexia in the past. She once said that she want to eat a lots of thing and later on she will throw it all up. Moreover, she lose a lots of weight but it also affect her health.

Yes. I think that there are fewer stigma against people who has abnormality than in the past. Especially among educated people who have a better understanding that psychological disorders can be cure and treat. Moreover, they understand that the patients can go back to be a normal person. However, in the remote location, the old beliefs still play a big role. If one of their family start talking about alien voice, the villager may invite a monk to do exorcism.

    1. To solve problems in remote area, providing more infomation about mental disorder is needed for educating people there. Traditional beliefs does not help anything except for make patient's relatives feel relax.

  3. Recently, I heard about the news that a famous singer - Singha of Sqeeze Animal committed suiside. I was quite surprised, because on his instragram he doesn't seem to havea psychological disorder. As we can guess, he might has some major depression, maybe he stayed alone in condo. When he had some problems, it might has no one to talk with him.

Nowadays, I think there are some people who look down on people with psychological disorders, but they haven't more than in the past. It seems that they look weird and discriminate them from the group.

    1. Your post has mentioned the same case as me. I think this should be the thing to remind everyone to love others appropriately. When facing with problems about love, it is important to find out what causes are and how to solve them and maybe try to get some parent’s advice for additional help. Every problem has solutions, but suicide or injuring yourself or others are not correct solutions.

  4. Recently, I saw a lot of news from many sources that mentioned about the death of Singh who is one of famous Thai musician in this period. The main reason that make him decide to suicide is the failure of his love. After police have investigated this case, they found he face with major depression as stated by psychologist. He accumulated his stress, his anxiety and his failure causing from his love for a long time, and he did not try to solve it until he decided to die by jumping out of his condo. That is such a sad news that nowadays people highly tend to be have psychological problem like depression, bipolar etc, and they did not know about them or realize before.

This year, I know tow famous people were suicide that one is a modal and the other one is an actress, they are suffering for depression, Depression is a kind of psychological disorder which make people feeling hopeless, depress, low confident and try to suicide. I personally think that it is a terrible disease because it can kill a beautiful and talent life. I do not think it is fewer than in the past. In fact, it is becoming a more worse problem for this generation.

    1. I think maybe because of technology that encourage us to live in our own world. We tend to become less sociable and believe that we can live by ourselves without getting in touch with other person in society. Depression is a serious disorder causing numerous problems and it seem to me that it getting worst in the developed country.

    2. How about the situation of mental illness in Taiwan, Joyce? Do people there have more understaning in patient who suffer from this illness?

    3. In my viewpoint, there are main solutions for helping mental disorders in Taiwan such as psychological counseling, drug therapy and religion. Nowadays, people are more open-minded for those people who are suffering from mental disorders. Therefore, people can go to see a doctor if they have any problems. However, I think that it is not enough for reducing the percent of mental problem because most people are stressful in this competitive society, and they think it is in a normal situation. So, I think that people should more focus on their mind and body, and try to listen ourselves in order to reduce mental disorders.

In ours daily life, I think we are fewer stigmas against people with psychological disorders than in the past. Because, in my life I live with stigmas people, which in the past person taught, but now it is normal person.

  7. I heard a lot of news that Thai and American celebrities who are suffered from mental disturbance. By the way, I can't remember in detail much. Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohann are the celebrities that I memorize about drug addicting of them. I curious why those famous stars who seem success in their lives choose the negative way. Maybe, the out look is different from reality because of pressure of their positions.

This time I believe that people are opened-mind to psychological disorder patients.

    1. I heard that Lindsay Lohan had a problem with her father, and she wrote the song named "Confession of the broken heart" to her father.

Maybe confession of becoming a famous person is a cause to their psychological problems.

  8. There is one actress that reminds me about the symptom of depression, she is Tangmo Patarathida, a famous actress in Thailand, She used to kill herself after suffered from unsuccessful love with Tono, her boyfriend and a famous singer. She usually post picture or message on social media that make people think that she is abnormal and she should have some abnormality in her mind. Even nowadays people tend to have more understanding in mental illness, but when they have to live with patients, some of them still discriminate and can accept those behavior.

    1. Why most of psychological disorder cases are the result from love or relationship? What do you think?

For me, loving someone is the most important part of their lives. When they lose their love, they may lose their lives.

    2. I've read that when someone who has a depression try to commit suicide, it is a sign that she asking for help. However, when I read the comments on Tangmo's news, there will be some people who just don't understand the reason why she want to commit suicide and blame her to be "a stupid girl". That make me upset.

    3. Dear Pun
If some people rely heavily on love, when they drift apart from their couple, they may feel like no inspiration to live at all, it's just like their soul disappear.

Sometime, keeping some room in our heart for love ourself is the best thing. Love dies, we're still alive.

    4. Dear Ice
This happened because you understand her illness, while others not. I think because what she did in the past effected the way people thought about her. Making others to understand same as you have to taking time.
