Fuel Your Creativity

After reading Tum’s writing about creativity, it makes me interested to look for the journal in the newspaper that I have to write on today (Friday). If you know creativity can be taught, are you interested to learn?
For me, definitely yes no matter how hard it is. In Thailand, we have the TCDC (Thailand creative and design center) to be responsible for creative issue. Interestingly, nowadays, several corporations jump into the business like this that stimulates Thai people to think creatively.

In England, eleven years ago, the government, Blair, showed his new vision to put creativity in school as a fundamental aspect and teach pupils to make them creative, innovative and develop problem solving ability, since they was young. This program collaborates with partnership between schools and creative professionals including artists, performers, architects and scientists (¶. 3). However, lot of schools claim that students should focus on the schools’ curriculum and they classify this skill as a distraction that can make the school raking down and cause the lower of students’ grade. Indeed, it claims the very opposite that creativity boost exam results and attendance (¶. 3). Moreover, this programme can decrease absent rate in school as well, but it seems very difficult when the accountability measures that determine the success or failure of schools continue to emphasize short-term improvements in formal qualifications (¶. 4).

Lastly, when I was writing, I wondered that because I studied in relating field, architectural design, leading to the idea to give the first priority in creativity weather other people think creativity play a crucial role in our live or not. Creative thinking is related to positive, effective thinking skill and problem solving skill. We already know it can be learnt by practicing. If the practice makes perfect, can practice with creativity be the smart practice?

“Imagination is more important than knowledge” (Albert Einstein).

  1. Taey, you article reminds me to Vanessa School (Nu-Dee), which teach kids as they are center of learning. Anyway, I have a friend who is a graphic director, said to me that sometimes, if you know a lot, it will be enough to your style. I mean, for example, before you learn red can represent of something, you will use red for anything, but after that, you already know red has exactly purpose, then you won't use red for anything anymore. What I tried to say, no mistake at all, which means your work are the same as everyone else. It sounds like you have a pattern to do.

Last, I agreed with Einstein which allow you to do critical thinking as we discussed today :)

  2. Taey,
After I read your post it remind me the interview I watched on TV. a month ago. Dr. De Bono who write the famous 6 hats thinking (I'm not sure the exactly title of the book but I think you know), he told about his 6 hats method that was taught in primary school also, like a pilot project. And the result is the student who attained this project mostly get higher grade than the student who didn't take part in the project. Actually, I don't know how to teach creative in school but for De Bono's way it guide us thoroughly think every way so maybe it is way the creative come.

  3. I couldn't agree more about your aspect that creativity can be learn and what you said that it should be teach in school. But I am not sure about your display picture. Is it the "good" or "bad" example of creativity in your aspect. May be we come from the difference school of though. I find it ridiculous to makes a fruit that "normally" easy ton peel off like a water melon to have a spike armor. Indeed, if some one show me an armored water melon, and tell me it is a product from a process called creativity of his. I would suggest him to sell it to some one else, because I enjoy my old fashion water melon. Moreover, I would be very happy if you please use your creativity to remove the spike from the outer layer of Durian, because, I hurt my self many time when I peel it (Thaeparnit U. one stand up comedy VIII).

  4. Every occupation requires creativity, be it teachers, advertisers, police or farmers; thus, everyone would like to be good at it. Creativity, I am of the opinion, happens when people have knowledge because without facts or skills, the creative thinking may be a just unusual idea. It is a fact that in order to specialise in a particular subject, people have to learn all the basics and then they start to apply and adapt. For example, I have to learn the Advertising 101 in order to make my advertisement, where creativity plays an important role. Similarly, when we are all taught to think critically, at first we have to understand and think analytically. How could we criticise if we have not understood yet? Therefore, creativity makes us evolve personally, professionally. Society and the world have also been evolved too.

“Imagination is important than knowledge” because we should not stop at what everyone knows or thinks about a particular matter. Humans are the only species who have developed over time.

It is good to encourage people to think “out of the box”, but do not forget that creative or innovative thinking should be based on a firm foundation of a particular subject.

  6. I totally agree with Tum. When I see all the comments for the first time, Wow! how long the response I should comment:a word or a page. But I think a word may be disrespectful to Taey. So I will try to write a bit longer.

The virtue of creativity is much more miraculous than the meaning of the word itself. Spontaneously, it may be untouchable but it is easily consumable. Like we all know, it can come in many forms and applies in many sciences. But I realize something about it more fundamental than that. Perhaps it can be just the simpliest thing. No complication or advanced background knowledge required here. Just adjust your perception towards the world. Like the motto from the movie Butterfly effect saying "Change one thing, change everything",only a bit of degree can cause an unexpected phenomenon. Hence, no matter how big or small a change is, for me, it called "creativity".
p.s. I can compare with length of other people's comment finally. Sorry Tum, I am not on your side anymore.
