Before we read "Invasive Species You Should Know," the first reading in unit 5 of Skillful RW3, Bixby and Scanlon have a question to respond to.

Bixby and Scanlon's question

Discuss this question in a comment below.
  • What insects to you have in your area? What problems can they cause?
You have ten minutes to respond in a comment. I suggest you brainstorm on a scrap of paper for two minutes before writing for about eight minutes.

  1. The first insect pest that comes to mind when I think of insects in my area is cockroaches. These thrive around Silom Road. My soi is full of them. I think that they are well fed from the food stalls in the soi, and the market next to my condo. The stall holders keep the area pretty clean, but inevitably there is a lot of food that falls to the ground, and the cockroaches love it all. The only real competition is from the rats, which also thrive in my soi. Fortunately, my condo is largely cockroach free.

But the same cannot be said of ants. These don't worry me as much as cockroaches, but if I leave something sweet out, a trail of small ants soon arrives. They must have sensitive senses of smell to detect the aroma because when I follow the trail back, it usually leads to one of the condos next to mine. I'm sure that my neighbours are not deliberately breeding ants to steal my food, but neither do the trails originate in my unit. But the ants don't bite, so they don't annoy me very much. I would worry a lot more about an invasion of cockroaches.

At my family home in Australia, insects are a lot more noticeable, but I think that's normal for country life. The flies especially used to annoy me. There are also flies around Silom, but so few that I hardly ever notice them. I guess that there are also mosquitoes, but again, these are hardly noticeable. Maybe they can't fly high enough to get to my home. (I have no idea about the flying ability of mosquitoes.)

  2. There are some mosquitoes in my house area which are very annoying. Mosquitoes like to fly around and bite people to suck their blood. Sometimes, they carry the diseases such as Dengue virus and Malaria. The main problem about mosquitoes that really annoys me is when I'm trying to sleep and mosquitoes fly around and try to land on my skin. This usually makes me very scratchy!

    1. It reminds me of my childhood. In summer, the mosquitoes were a real problem. We used to use coils that gave off smoke to chase them away, and also we used screens on the windows to keep them out.

    2. I agree with you, the mosquitoes do like biting people to suck their blood, this will carry disease to people.

  3. In my home area, there are a lot of different kind of insects there, for example, mosquito, etc. In terms of problems, their voice is really noisy and I cannot sleep well when they are in my room. Moreover, I have to be careful to keep my food in some areas that they cannot touch; otherwise, it will make me get trouble for my health.

  4. There are many insects in my area such as cockroaches, flies, mosquito and so on. Cockroaches is the most creepiest creature, it is really hard to kill them (I think you must have tried to kill them), they run very fast and they can fly, also they carry disease, for example, diarrhea is very common disease that they carry. Flies carry diarrhea too by flying to our food and then fly away, if we eat the food, we might suffer by diarrhea. But I think they are less annoying compare to cockroaches.

    2. I agree with you, a cockroach that scared me the most is a flying-cockroach. It's very hard to deal with them and also hard to runaway.

    3. I agree that cockroaches are creepy. They creep and get in every where. And as you note, they are very hard to kill. Unfortunately, they have invaded AUA, although the traps that have been put out to capture and kill them seem to have worked fairly well. We do not want to see disgusting cockroaches in our classrooms!

  5. It is such a nuisance seeing cockroaches around my apartment. They are probably the only insects in my area. Their unfriendly appearance like very long antenna always scare me. They disturb my peaceful life. I scream off all the way down just when I see it.

  6. Cockroach and mosquito are the insects that I have in my area. Cockroach is very dirty and it can spread their disease and might be able to make our dishes became dirty. Mosquito eat blood as food from people. It can also spread disease such as dengue fever.

  7. The insects in my area are of course cockroaches. Actually they don't cause much problems except disgusted feeling whenever you see them (I feel yuck even seeing it from the picture). Moreover, they can cause disgusting smells. However, It's really difficult to eliminate all of them due to their fast breeding and their durability. From my experience, one powerful hit of a broom(or even Thor's hammer) can not make it die. Their legs might be torn but their antennas are still wiggling and surviving. Some said that this creature is an antique creature which has lived for a long time because it can survive in every condition.

  8. Mosquito is insects that I see often in my area. They generate very quickly and in huge number. Mosquito causes many problems, both the little problem like itching me, making me feel very annoyed and the serious problem like carrying some diseases that may cause dead, such as dengue fever and malaria.

  9. The insects in my area that I think I've found them the most is ants. I always see an army of ants in my room although there is no food or candy in my room. Ants cause several problems to me. Firstly, they invade my computer table and it's really annoyed me when I see all of them walking happily on my table. Secondly, they live in my bookshelf. I love to read a book and seeing these ants around my books are things that I can't stand with it. I'm afraid that they may destroy my books. Even I tried to clean my room, they still used my room to be their home.

  11. In my area, there are many insects live there and they are harmful to people in some ways such as they are irritating to people or they could also bring the deceases to human. The insect that most people would think about is a cockroach, which I also don't like it. This insect could bring the decease to human because they might walk pass the litter and bring some bacterias to your food when they walk pass your food. Also, another insect I could think of is fly, which could also be the same case as a cockroach. Moreover, they are irritating to people by flying around you. Lastly, another insect that is not only irritating but also able to bring the decease which is a Dengue to human is a mosquito. Many of my friends also got that decease.

  13. Rove beetle is normally found in Salaya, Nakorn Pathom. This beetle actually has no harm to human; they are not bite, or disrupt people. The real problem is they product toxin in their hemolymph, so if someone accidentally kill them, these hemolymph will leak out of their body, and cause paederus dermatitis. This toxin will make your skin burn, and pain for a couple weeks, and leave a scar sometimes. Also, this beetle can be lure by light source in the night, so they usually some to your room in the evening if you leave the window open.

    2. It's very interesting insects and dangerous insects.

    3. They actually can be found in Bangkok but are less abundant than rural area. Since they normally lives in wetlands, so rural area with rice pads, canals, and streams are prefered place for them.

  14. I will talk about mosquitoes. They are a group of species of small insects, which live in every where in the world including my living area. They can cause many health problems to people, such as yellow fever, dengue fever and malaria. Because they can be vectors of viruses and parasites like plasmodium causing malaria. Through their seeking for blood, they can spread the disease widely.
