Magic of mushrooms

What I read

“The unexpected magic of mushrooms” by Richard Gray tells us that mushrooms and other organisms in the fungi kingdom have the unexpected magic that is very useful for our life, such as helping to cure cancer by protecting its DNA from damage, that and the compounds that come from fungi can destroy viruses like flu and polio. Fungi can also deal with other problems beside our health. It can break down plastic in a short amount of time when it normally take years to break down. People are trying to figure out ways to replace plastic with fungi so that our world and environment can become better.

My response

The unexpected magic of mushrooms seems to be an interest article for me. The reason that I chose to do this article is because its title when I saw the title it makes me want to know more about it. I never thought that mushrooms would have this much benefits. Mushrooms for me I think it is more safe than a medicine that have a chemical mixture because mushrooms come from nature and from what I have read the scientist are now having some medicine from mushroom that can cure some disease such as cancer. In the future I think that scientist will be able to produce more medicine that comes from nature to help more people that are suffering from health problems all around the world.

The thing that interest me in this article is about the "smart concrete" that can heal itself. I have heard some about this before that it is a concrete that can grows into any crack to repair the damage. I think it is a very good idea and if this really work well it can help us and all people around the world to save money from repairing the damage concrete. Another thing that also interest me is using fungi to replace plastic. It will help our world to prevent having too much waste problem and also global warming.

  1. I also liked the BBC's title, but unlike Int, when I saw it, it reminded me of popular recreational drug use, like marijuana. Magic mushrooms are very popular among some drug users for the hallucinatory and other effects they can produce.

But I strongly disagree with one thing that Int says. I don't think that because things "come from nature," they are safer or in any way better than artificial things. Heroin also comes from nature, but I'm not sure that that makes it a good thing to use for fun. Many poisons, such as the cyanide in almonds, are also perfectly natural, but if you eat your almonds raw with the cyanide intact, that will not be good for you: some unnatural cooking is much better before consumption. And lots of animal behaviours are natural, such as murder, rape, stealing and so on, but I don't think that makes these behaviours good.

However, that the idea might be controversial also makes it a good one, so I like Int's question that invites us to follow it up.

  3. I have heard before that some mushrooms and other living things from Kingdom Fungi can cure some diseases and destroy some viruses. But I have never used a medicine that have a mixture of a mushrooms before. Anyway, I think using mushroom in a medical treatment is a useful choice for us in the future but we also have to concern about some species that are poisonous and more researches should be done on this issue.

  4. I have heard some about the medicine that made from mushrooms, but I've never taken it. This article surprise me; I don't know that mushrooms have a lot of advantages, but some mushrooms contain toxic, so maybe this is a big disadvantage of eating unknown mushrooms.

  5. Yes, I have heard that mushrooms can be made a medicine to help people prevent some diseases; however, some mushrooms can be the poison that is harmful people as well. To know which one is good and which one is bad needs to do more researches on this.
