Welcome to RW2b and to our class blog

What I read

Although I've read a lot in preparation for it, this post has a different purpose than summarizing and responding to something I've read. I want to welcome you to your EAP class on Saturday mornings.

So, welcome.

My response

Thank you for joining our Saturday class in Reading and Writing for academic purposes. I hope you find the next six weeks useful, productive, also challenging, and perhaps even fun.

My question

As you can see, online discussion makes an appearance early on in Unit 1 of Skillful (Bixby & Scanlon, 2013, p. 9) and there is a more extensive coverage of this common part of modern university courses on page 66.

Also, in her foreword to students on page 4 (or perhaps page 6 if you have a later print than mine), the series editor, Dorothy E. Zemach, gives some strategies for successful learning, one of which is to "be an independent learner" (in Bixby & Scanlon, 2013). This class blog is one way for us to do this. As Zemach suggests in her comment, it is one way for you to "find and then share information about ... different topics." Some of the topics you will write about here are the unit topics, but I also Zemach's suggestion that "reading for pleasure and using the Internet in English" are important, so your writing here will not be limited to the topics of the units that we study over the next six weeks.

  • Do you agree with Zemach and the authors of our book and myself? Is a class blog a useful addition to our class this term? (This is two sentences, but it's only one question for you to respond to.)

You can respond as soon as you accept the invitation I will soon send you to join this blog.

Writing tip

When you write your comment, imagine that readers have not seen the question you are answering. This forces you to make your work an independent piece of writing, one that makes sense by itself.

    2. I agree. It's a great way to practice writing for fluency, but it can also be used to practice more academic writing. In addition, it is now a common tool in universities around the world, with professors expecting students to participate in such discussions outside of class to follow ideas from lectures.

  4. In my opinion, I agree with using class blog is really beneficial to people who would like to improve their writing skill. When we write to people, we would have enough time to think and also it is easy to modify your mistake. Moreover, if you would like to adjust or expand your idea, it is extremely easy to do it without bringing the confusion to a writer and readers.

An online blog is a useful place for us because this is not only the place we could write anything on, but also the place that we can have a discussion either long or short. You can create your own topic easily meaning that you will be able to talk to people in the particular topic where your are interested. It is not restrict you to just write something down without any response.

  6. I agree with Zemach because I think the best way to improve your English skills, you only need to practice. Using English skills in daily life, writing, reading, listening, and speaking, will help the learners practice more. They can learn from the others by sharing their ideas and they can discuss about each topic. For example, you can discuss about your interests, about books, or movies, with your friends in English by talking or writing. This will help you a lot to improve your English skills.

  7. I agree with Zemach and the authors of our book that a class blog is useful because it can help we to learn English better and we can use it anywhere and anytime. Also, the point about finding and then sharing information about different topics sounds interesting and I think that reading for pleasure and using the Internet in English are important because if we read many texts, it can help we improve our English. So, I think that it is useful to have a class blog.

  9. I agree with the idea that learning should be more independent as it can because each students have different nature and different ideas of their own. It would makes learning more interesting and more useful if students get the opportunity to choose what they want.

Also, i think this class blog would be useful for our class, if students can share the topic that they interest to the class.

  12. I think an online blog is a very good and useful idea for our class. It will allow students to share and read their classmates' essay which will help students in improving their writing skills. Reading others' writings will be very helpful to inspire new ideas and writing techniques. It is also a good way to improve one's English skills. An online blog is also very convenient since students are able to access at anytime they surf the internet.
