Hospital's CO2 emission

Nowadays, we have much concern about environmental health and The Economist also raises up this topic in "The best way to make hospitals green is to keep people out of them" article.

In the article, the writer says that hospitals highly produce Co2, especially from medical equipment and pharmaceuticals. Some equipments can use only once and then they will be waste. Therefore, if we want to reduce the waste, the patients should have their own equipment. He also says that the tactics hospitals is to keep patient out and look after them at home. As a result, the hospital will be more green.

I am curious about hygiene. The medical staffs use the equipment only once because of it and why they think that patient's equipment will be clean enough. It is clear that the patient cannot infect a disease from others, but how about cleanliness and how the patient keep their equipment. I agree that we can repeatably use some equipments for a particular person, but in general we still cannot use them. And another point is that the hospital just keep their patient out and then their area will be more green, but actually the world is not more green because the equipment still use at patient's home.

  1. In the medical area, we should think about the possibilty of infection. sometimes, I can hear the news that some people infected in the hospital. In fact, it is very hard to consider which should come first, environment or infection.

  2. I absolutely agree with Ann. I think keeping the patients out of the hospital and letting them stay at home cannot help to solve the environmental problem because the medical eqipment also is used. Moreover, using the same equipment is not a good idea even used in the same patient beauces it easily causes the infection which leads the patient worse. I think the main point is that the scienctist should do the research and try to develop the medical equipment that is suitable to one time use and doesn't cause bad effects to our environment.
