lack vocabulary

Now we concern about global warming very much and today BBC News presents a new survey in "Africa 'lack vocabulary to deal with climate change'".

"people tend to blame themselves or their peers for local environmental degradation and some see the changes as a form of divine punishment" (¶ 10). Moreover, language is a big problem in some areas because many people do not understand the meaning of climate change; they do not have local words to explain this concept.

I wonder that why they do not have words to explain this situation. I think that normally, we have easy words to explain. Although the meaning is difficult to understand, we can explain it by using examples or comparison with other things that they knew. I believe that the problem is lack of giving information; is not lack of vocabulary. If the problem is lack of vocabulary, what will government do? Will they create new words?

  1. I agree with Ann that lacking of information or knowledge on climate change issues make African people can not express their visions on the issues. As we know, Africa is a developing country, some group of people still belives in supernatural (also same as Thai people who live in remoted area). When unknown things happens, they blame supernatural first. I think that African people are not familar with this situation because they live in enriched natural environment. Therefore, they do not know exactly what it is. Providing education to people on this issues will make them find the ways to express their understanding. I also think that vocabruary is not the major problem. I recall that in many countries that have their own language like Thailand also have no vocabulary for computers. Therefore, they use the native vocabulary as their own language.
