Digital Book

Nowadays, there have been changes in many things especially as the technology. A digital book is one of the new technologies that people are interesting in. The sales of e-book and audio book download as we see in the article "UK general title digital book sales soar to £16m in 2010” on the BBC News.

According to the article in BBC News, in 2010, sales of general titles digital books in UK increase very fast, which are from £4m to £16m. It’s not only about general, but it is also academic and professional book that have the best seller in a part of digital books. “However, the increased digital sales suggests devices such as Amazon's Kindle and the Sony Reader are increasingly making an impact(2011,¶4). Moreover, the consumer publisher continues to develop their product in order to new group of audiences. Print book markets are still popular, and both “will co-exist in the future”(2011,¶7).

In my opinion, technology can make people to live their life in the different way. They do not go to the shop for buying books because they have an online to buy. It is very convenience, and it can help you when you do or find something easier. A digital book is a good product to give knowledge in vary kinds of books that are portable and very light. You can take it in everywhere. In the future, the government in Thailand should use the digital book or some technology to help their citizen more literate and become a developed country.

  1. Pom,
I agree. Technology is great, and it's getting better all the time. I don't have a digital book reader yet, but I'm sure I will end up getting one.

A few years ago, in fact, quite a few years now, I started using online dictionaries, and as you saw on the first day of class, my usual dictionary is now the excellent online version of the Oxford English Dictionary. I used to use the paper version in Australia, but at 20 very large volumes, it was a real pain to use - but a great work out for the arm muscles. From about 1995, I used a CDrom version, which was much more useful than the paper version, but since it's gone online, I use it all the time. I also use the online version of the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary. And all of the newspapers, magazines and journals I read are in the online versions.

I have a lot of books, so I'm still happy to read novels, philosophy and so on in the old fashioned paper book form, but they take up a lot of space, and you can't really carry them around.

There is just one thing I disagree with in your post. Why do you think the Thai government should do anything? Wouldn't it be better if the people, business people, consumers, parents, students, book sellers, book lovers, and so on, did something without government interference? Why rely on or wait for a corrupt government to mess things up and try to control it and people?

  2. I forgot to say that when I left Australia to live in Thailand, I gave my OED to my brother. It's never used by anyone, but the 20 volumes look great as a decorative item in his home.

  3. Pom!
I agree you about the development the technologies and also this new way for us reading a good books by internet. Additionally, I thinks is an idea the government education department to invest in this kind the technology for to get better the education in the country. However, I have some questions about this topic. What is the quality of school in Thailand? All schools there are access internet or only in the cities/ tows have these possibilities? For my research I use internet, but for my hobby I prefer read a good paper books form. However, same Peter’s commentary, here in Thailand I don’t have space also, it is impossible carry books in my travels.

I agree with you.Techology is good and it is convient. you said that people don't go to the shop to buy books and can find something in the digital book. However, techology has a weak point.First,Nowaday, some of teaching and homework are use competer,so it can make students cannot write the charater. For example, the thai people graduate doctor degree for field of education from China,he applied to a Chinese teacher at Oriental culture Chinese Academic school. When he tested the writing, he can not write by hand writing,he would like to use computer to write but it's not allowed. So,he didn't passed the test.Second, now, many readers can read the newspapers infortation, story books and songs in the computer. It's make the volumn sale decease and close the company in later such as Borders In conclusion, computer is only good point.

  5. Pom, I think a digital book is fited with only unban & rich people. I agree that it'll make our life more convenience. People can order lots of book from the internet and they don't need to go out to the book store. However I see some points that I disagree. For example, the price is increasing. I wonder how poor people can support for the price. In my opinion, this digital book was created for urban people only, it's not fit with the upcountry people. Next if you travel to the poor area, especially when they live in the undeveloped area, no electrical, how will you recharge your digital book. I like the old fasioned paper book form, because you can carry it anywhere you want. After you finish reading it, you can donate it to poor school or library. To support the poor students that don't have money to buy a book.I can't imagine if our Government try to change the teaching style by let all students use the digital books or study online at home. How unfair of the life will be. How do you think,Pom?

  6. Thip,
Whilst sad for Borders and others, is it a bad thing if progress means that some businesses that fail to innovate and improve have to close?

For example, shouldn't the the Thai government allow Tesco and other large businesses to open stores anywhere they want because that is much better for Thailand the the Thai people, especially poor people, than protecting small stores in villages?

Protecting the small stores in villages and towns means that the poorest people in the country have to pay more for less choice from less efficient providers, and that seems wrong to me. The poorer Thai people who are farmers in the country should have the same rights to a larger range of better goods at cheaper prices as do wealthier people in Bangkok, like us. It is wrong for the government to make everyone, and the whole Thai nation, suffer to protect one small group who only care about themselves and don't want competition to improve.

Digital books are very convenient. It is the sort of new technology that is helpful to the environment too because it avoids cutting trees. In my opinion it isn’t accessible to everybody. I hope the people can begin to buy at a low price so it will be affordable for all people.
My husband gave me the Amazon kindle digital book, but I did not begin to use. I need to buy the Amazon program and choose the books I want to download and buy. I like to read traditional books. But I know I will use it sooner or later because it has a lot of advantages.

  8. I know digital books are getting popular. However,I still prefer paper books. The reason Art states above is one reason. We have to think about the gap between the rich and the poor. In my country, some teachers let children use Nintendo DS, a gadget mainly to play game , as a part of class .So,students who can not afford to buy DS feel miserable, although they can borrow it as far as they use it in class. In addition, I am afraid of electromagnetic wave.I feel depressed after I had been exposed by heavy electricity. That's why I avoid using any electrical appliances as far as possible.

  9. I agree with Kuriko. My friend and I love reading several types of books. We often share it to each other. If you use a digital book, you can't lend it to your friends. Also, you need to use wifi to download e-book. When you go to rural areas that don't have wifi, you can't download a new one. Furthermore, I agree with Peter's idea that you can carry your paper books to read every where you want.
