Will the Earth Turn Desert?

Everybody likes a worm climate and a rain once in a while to refresh the atmosphere. However, we don’t perceive of the consequence of these pleased moments. The article “Soils of UK and Europe Drying out” on the BBC News (Amos, 2011) is possible we know more about this.

According to Amos, the year of 2011 began dry with clear and impressing date of one the more new satellites of observation of the earth in Europe. This it present us that the thirsty earth of water. The month of April was the hottest month registered in England. “It was also the 11th driest month; with on average just half the usual rainfall. And in parts of south-east England, there was less than 10% of normal precipitation”. (2011 5). Amos also, show us in this article “two maps illustrate neatly the process of drying out through March and April” (2011 10). The water becomes evaporated. The meteorologists also need following a new ways for give us a correct forecast, according to the article.

In this article we can notice the extension of the problem of the drought of the soil in some areas of the world with serious consequences for the humanity. This topic has been studied at a long time. However, only in the last years it started to be outstanding as a serious environmental problem due to his social and economical impact. These areas are usually areas of agriculture implicated the economic situation of the people and of the affected countries. I think, there are many causes that we can get up for this problem of the drought of the soil, caused by the own man. For instance, improper use of earth; deforestation; use of inappropriate agricultural techniques; uncontrolled exploration of fragile ecosystems; burned; use excessive of pesticides; pollution. Besides these mentioned factors, caused by the man, there are also the climatic phenomena of droughts and flood, which collaborate for the aggravation of the process of drought of the soil causing desert in a lot of places. I think we need more attention with this environmental problem before we have it to live a desert climate.

  1. Neiva,
My country is also facing the drought situation every year. It sound like a normal but it is becoming more severe. Thailand is a kitchen of the world so this problem destroys our opportunities for country development. Nowadays, we found the way that is the construction of check dam that lay across the stream in the area of the origin of the stream. It can conserve a soil in the forest that water can percolate around this area, it will make this area has a moisture enough in dry season and it will protect this area from a wildfire and a plants can grow easily and the trees do not shed leaves, the forest will has a green shady. For the resource of the river a tree that grows around the area it’s very important because it can keep moisture for a forest, for the water resource it could built a check dam for keep water for agriculture. The check dam is made from the local resources such as branches of a tree, a sack of sand, rocks, etc. In addition, it can slow down the movement of the water when it has a heavy rain in the rainy season or when the storm is coming. A check dam can prevent or slow down the movement of a mud too.

  2. According to the article, recently, the drought has become more serious problem in the UK. Not only in the UK is facing with this problem, but also it happens in many countries including Thailand. There are several factors that make our world change steadily. The main factor is human being who are creator and destroyer at the same time. They don't think about the effects in long term, they focus on the present that's why many problems are going to happen in the near future. Also, people are not aware of this problem until they face with it. Therefore, the actions that you do today, it's the outcome in the future.

  3. Our earth is suffering abnormal wether, especially these two or three years. One reason is the abnormal activity of macula. Another theory believe our earth is undergoing dipolar turning. However we can do nothing until now to change it for the reason. Still, we should do something what we can do about environmental protection for ourself and our offsprings, such as saving water, electric, paper, and other energy sources.

  4. Neiva,
In my opinion, the problem about drought of soil is become a serious issue for many country around the world. I think human is a main reason of this problem because they do not care enough about natural disaster that happen today. In North Eastern of Thailand is experience in the same issue.
For this reason, we should preserve forest for relieve this problem.

  5. According to the article, the amount of water decrease because deforestion and factories. I means factories release a lot of gas in the air so it destroy the ozone layer and at the same time, some people deforest in many areas. Therefore, it becomes global warming that make the climate change a lot in this few years so it has natural disaster and also it is dried in many countries.

I could not agree more with you idea. Check dam is cool because it does not destroy the environment like concrete dam does. Also, I saw PTT ad that show the picture of check dam that they sponsored. It can keep the moisture of the forest.
