A Symbol of New York

Nowadays, not only new technologies have been increasing considerably, but also car manufacturers are raising steadily in order to serve the customers' need. As we can see in the article "New York City picks Nissan minivan as next taxicab" on the BBC News (2011).

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that the business agreement is approximately $1bn. The design of minivan will be based on Nissan carmaker. In early 2013, the van of US Ford Motor and Turkish Karsan Otomotiv will be cooperated with each other for 10 years contract. He also mentioned that the yellow taxies are highlight of New York's cap. The new model of the van has an overhead window that easily see the scenery of city skyscrapers and charge stations for cell phones. Moreover, Taxi and Limousine Commissioner David Yassky said that the taxi will have satellite navigation in order to make the passengers feel comfortable if they don't know the route around.

I think there are many factors that make people need to adapt their daily lives to new environments. Everything has been changing all the time and they all can accept it. They also do things for their better lives. Currently, every house almost has a car, some house has more than one car that causes air pollution and traffic jam in the city. Everybody wants to use their own car to reach the destination quickly but they don't think about the global warming. Right now the oil price is increasing steadily, so they can save the world by taking a taxi or skytrains to reduce global warming and traffic jam. In the US, the taxi and limousine commissioner tries to serve the passengers such as providing the station of charging for cell phones. That makes more convenient for the passengers. He also tries to get more attention from the passengers by using new technology in the taxi. Thus, car manufutures should have a lot of options to add value of product in high competitive market to gain more profit.

  1. As June says, car companies try to add new options to their products in order to inspire customers to buy.Her post reminds me one of my friends, who is working for a electrical appliances company. He confesses he is not sure when he can stop produce new functions for products. Now,his dream is to be a vendor in streets. Will the time when people are satisfied with new technologies come someday ? Furthermore,as June mentioned above,we should think about environment. The more convenient our life become, the more pollution increase.

  2. I notice that in "New York cab driver opposes plan for new uniform taxi" at least one New York cab driver strongly disagrees with the city government's proposal. What do you think of John Caines's reasons for thinking that mayor Bloomberg's plan to replace the cabs is a very bad idea that should be stopped?

  3. I agree with the idea that they try to change the new look for New York taxi. To create new style of taxi that goes along with the environment is challenging for Nissan Company. It seems to be they try to provide everything inside taxi for the convenience of the passenger. However I wonder how the New Yorker can handle with this trouble. For instance, the cost of the new taxi, it comes with lots of the new technology such as GPS and charge stations for cell phone. How can the drivers who have low income to cope with this problem. Also the passenger has to be preparing that they might be pay extra money for the technology that attached with the taxi. Normally when you get on the taxi, the price is very expensive compare with the public transportation. I believe that both taxi drivers and passengers want to protect the world from global worming but are there any choices for them to choose?

  4. I think John Caines's idea is reasonable because he said that what if that one manufacturer can't get you the parts when you need them? It's risky(2010,para9). He also worries about the cost of a new cap. That's not a good idea to replace all old caps. This makes the taxi drivers have to pay more for new technology in a car. However, it's good choice to have more fuel efficient than current cabs or run solely on electricity to reduce the problem of global warming.

In my opinion the new taxicab is going to provide luxury accessories; therefore this will affect the consumer cost of the service, moreover nowadays, the city of New York is one of the most expensive in this sort of service. I understand that the big cities need to adapt and move as soon as the technology is changed. I see advantages and disadvantages to the consumer and to the society in general. The advantage is the new taxicab will probably reduce the consumption of gasoline, charge stations for cell phones and GPS this last one is not necessary because nowadays mostly of the mobile phones have this service. On the other hand it is not offering any plus to take care the global warming like electrical or solar power engine that those will be a benefit for all the society and could justify the investment and end with the traditional yellow taxi of New York.

  6. I agree more with Susana, and Mr. Caines, which is one reason I think that the taxi drivers or companies should decide what sort of cabs they drive offering a variety of sizes, services and options, not the government. The operators are best able to decide what is profitable, what customers want and what is most efficient.

And there should be a lot more licences given out - anyone who passes a test should be able to get a licence, with no limit on the number. I think free competition in a free market is the most effective way to encourage efficiency and better service. Letting the government force a one size solution on everyone does not sound like a good idea to me, and it is not what made America or any other nation great.

  7. I agree with Susana that the big city like New York is high cost of living but the government might want to have the same standard of taxies in New York because this city makes a lot of profit for the government that's why they try to replace all old caps. I also agree with Peter that it's good idea to make a deal with each other for the most effective way of this problem.
