Gender Career

Nowadays the hectic city life as the stress to arrive early to the job, relationship and mixed culture, means that everybody seeks professional behavioral help. Therefore taking the decision to seek a professional help for abnormal behavior is not easy, mostly for the male gender. Today the areas of psychology and counseling are being taken over by females. As we see in the report “Need Therapy? A Good Man is hard to find. In the New York Times (Carey, 2011).

Benedict Carey said that Mr. Puckett 30, who needs a therapist for a domestic abuse program, sought professional help, however; it was difficult for him to find a confident therapist. Moreover they were all female. He could improve his health, when he found a male therapist. “I am just glad I ended up with the person I did, because for me it made all the difference” said Mr. Puckett (2011, ¶ 9). According to Carey the feminization of mental health care began more than a generation ago. Men only have one in five positions in psychology. Some Universities cannot enroll male students. The result, many therapists argue, is that the profession is at risk of losing its appeal for a large group of sufferers — most of them men — who would like to receive therapy but prefer to start with a male therapist. (2011, ¶ 32) The reason for the move is economic and cultural. When the trend started and the profession lost status, the men just evacuated, although women get blamed. Said Dorothy Cantor. The gender is not important. A good therapist is a good therapist, male or female. Even so most men believe that only another man can help them. Furthermore therapists and men who have been in treatment agree that there are certain topic that are best discussed within gender, also they are less ashamed; The gender identify is an issue. In the last few years Psychologists identified as a problem gender like the tension between being a provider as than being a mother.

I agree with Carey about the mental health care is the field that women moved up and took their place. There are two reasons for this tendency. First economic, in the 90’s the government reduced the cost of fee for this sort of professional services. The second in this time the male dominated the therapy consulting, psychiatry, moved increasingly to drug treatments. Meanwhile the women began to be incorporated in the force work. They showed more confidence to the talking cure than men. So I think to make a decision to consult a psychologist is difficult for the women as well for male. In addition our culture for generations taught us that man is the strong gender. Nevertheless I think that it is far from the reality. However something is true that there are less men asking for professional behavior help than women. Also most of the need for health behavior care statistically is caused by men, although ironically the people asking for professional help are the women, who for the most part are the victims. I reinforce my idea that men as much as women need professional help to be able to handle the problems of the big cities. Moreover Society needs to have the choice, and it seems that the choice is being taken away. Finally, there now is an opportunity for the few men, who take the option to study mental health care. Nowadays there are so many more female in areas like psychology and counseling that the governments must do something to shift this tendency.

  1. Susana,
When you write that "the governments must do something to shift this tendency" (¶ 3), what do you have in mind? Why should the government discriminate against women because men no longer like this field?

Might a better, and fairer, solution be to allow men to charge higher fees for the specialized male service that they can offer. This would attract more men simply because it paid better than other careers currently available. Of course, women must also be free to charge whatever professional fees they want to.

I don't see any reason for governments to interfere in what is the clear result of free choices by individuals.
