Space innovation

Since human has space research, it makes the world discover new things that are various benefits to humanity. Research the space in many countries has been developed continuously and it provides mankind with a challenge as you can see in the article “Centre champions UK space innovation” on the BBC News (Amos, 2011).

The International Space Innovation Centre (ISIC) is the latest space research site in the UK. It was founded on 6 May 2011 to offer a great deal in various aspects for such as industry, science and education for Britain. ISIC was formed by government to set it up as a none-profit company and will be supporting for future investment which focusing on; utilize Earth Observation Satellite’s data, analysis on climate change from space data and provide space systems and services. This could make the UK’s space industry increasing to 10% of the world-wide market and might create 100,000 jobs within 2030.

In my opinion, there are both negative and positive sides from space research. Staring with positive aspects, many countries gain advantages from the space industry, especially the developed countries as various purposes. For example, geographic information from satellite which is used to develop a GPS system helps us to tell the way and prevent getting lost of direction in real time. Also, it can reduce waste time better than reading a map as in the past. Besides, there are educational benefit for rural areas which are not reached by television, but they are able to access by using broadcasting instruction that make students having possibility to learn the new things from communication satellite. More importantly, it is able to predict natural calamities such as floods and storms that are the help from satellite. As a result, space research is actually an investment that improves the quality of our lives.

Despite many possible advantage aspects, not everyone agree that this money is well spent. Many people feel that a lot of money was spent on space research and it seems that all these money are going to be lost. For example, we spent a lot of money on space for military purpose to be powerful nation in the world instead of developing educations or building a well-being for people in the country. In addition, when the space equipments such as satellites, space shuttles and so on will be expired then they will become space junks. However, we should use budget to solve problems on the earth because the need of humanity should always come first, such as feeding the starving, solving the current economic crisis or dealing with the environmental issues.

  2. Kukik,

I really like the way you wrote and also your opinion. I fully agree with you that we should spend time and related resources to solve the problems in the world before look for the opportunities outside the world. However, there are some space researches that are very useful. For example, we use the satellites for telecommunication and surveying the World's weather and climate. It can protect people from natural disaster by the satellite images which captured in space. The picture can tell you, what is happening or will happen. Frequently, I use the satellite images for flood forecasting and natural resources management.

  3. I agree that the need of humanity should always come first. Nowadays, a lot of people suffered because they have no food to eat. Also, many people don't have any places to stay. We should solve these problems before spending money on space research. Moreover, most of the powerful coumtries spend money on this research because they want to compete with their rivals.

  4. Hi Kukik!
I agree with you about the advantages and disadvantages in the artical. Nowadays, a lot of children have no chance to learn so if we have satellite then, the number of children who have knowledge will be increase. For example, Thai government concerns about this problem so they use this system to other provinces ,even though, it spends a huge money at the first time but in the future those children will have a knowledge to find a job.Lastly, the rate of unemployment will decrease.

  5. Sorry, I put my comment at wrong place before.
I agree with your idea to invest this area, eventhough some people use it for war. ancestor hunt from using hand to using stick and knife which is a great development, even though some people using stick and knife to kill other peoples. futhermore, we can get more benefit from the study. However, I don't agree always making it to be the first request for a country. We should rather do our best to invest it.

  6. A perfect topic to practise the grammar advantages and disadvantages on p. 186 of Quest, which is on for tomorrow.

I have a couple of other topics in mind, but this one is spot on, and Kukik's response clearly focussed on that.

Personally, I think the advantages far outweigh the apparent disadvantages. Most people are hungry not because of lack of resources or money, but because of corrupt and incompetent government - the poverty stricken nations like Burma have great natural resources and the people only suffer poverty and its symptoms because of their evil governments. Sometimes I think some governments want to keep their people poor and ignorant just to stay in power and continue stealing their nation's wealth.

That the money could be spend otherwise does not seem to me a real disadvantage to space research. It is certainly true, but I don't think it's a very convincing reason not to spend on space research.

Is it a bad thing to compete with rivals?

What are the advantages and disadvantages, the benefits and drawbacks, of competing with rivals?

I agree with Peter.I think, most of politicans are corruption. They don't care their countries are develope or not, or protect the natural resources, they want to benefit. For example,Laos is the same Burma, the government of Laos don't want their people high education and developing country because it is easy to control their people and some countries supported money to Laos but their people got a few money, the rest of money is corrupted by politicans. The other sample the government cut some land is near the north of Thailand to give China rental and chase LAOS people out the land. For benefit,it can do every thing.

I think that the benefits of competition with rival country are far outweigh the drawbacks as my supporting opinion below.

    Advantage:
    1. Lead to different thinking and get more innovation in order to develop and make a better life. For example, the Apollo program, properly viewed as an outgrowth of international competition between the U.S. and the USSR that become to a truly international effort.
    2. When there is competition, new technologies will be even more improvement such as communication, environment and so on. After that, they can make income and profit from selling satellites or services to other countries.
    3. Build reputation when the research is successful.
    4. Foster from international cooperation or other countries that oppose with rival, such as money or space equipment and they could become to a full partner in the future.

    Disadvantage:
    1. Competition usually spends a lot of money more than the usual space research, and also money may be wasted and unable to regain if it is failure. The loss can affect the economy so the competition is not always accurate.
    2. If competition is a symbol of power, it might bring about the war.

    Any ideas? all are welcome.

  10. As KUKIK says, space research has both merit and demerit. In my opinion, economic prosperity should not be put before environment. If there is any possibility to pollute space, space research should be limited.

  11. Hi Kukik
I agree that the space research come up with two sides, good or bad. Some countries are poor and they should solve the problem of lack of food and education first. I know it’s not easy to solve the corruption problem which happens in every country around the world. It’s something that everyone wants to change but it’s very difficult. Some country complained about the government invests too much money on the Space research; in the other hand poor people don’t have a health insurance that they think it is more important for them in this life. They don’t care to move to be in another planet or the better signal for the GPS. They care about how they can have food or get the better treatment by using their health insurance that should be supported from the government.

I agree with Oat and Tina. I understand that the humanity must be the priority and the countries must before another thing to help to fight the hunger and poverty anywhere in the world. However, I think developing and financing this sort of projects U.K is helping to much to avoid the hunger and the poverty in the world. Furthermore, it is offering most advantage than disadvantage. For instance, they will create jobs, also the satellite help to the people live in margin zone willing to study, prevent the people about natural disaster (tsunami, earthquake, hurricane). Also it could help the countries to protect the nations. In other words nowadays the drug trafficking and terrorism have higher technology and the government had the responsibility to protect their people. Finally I think, there are specific organization entrusted to fight against the poverty and hunger. Those organisms receive help of the development countries and in my opinion one way to help against poverty and hunger by means of up the education of the people.

I agree that competing in space research can lead to war between powerful countries. They spend large amount of money because they want to built strong space army and space military base.
