Are group discussions a good way to make decisions?

Source background
Most conveniently, Pamela Hartmann asks a Yes/No question on the opening page for chapter 2, "The Global Economy" (2007).

_______________________________________

Quest's Yes/No question is:
Are group discussions a good way to make decisions?

My answer is:
What is your answer?

And Hartmann sensibly goes on to ask as "Why? Why not?" She realises that in an academic setting, we can have whatever opinion we want, but on condition that we are ready and able to support that opinion since those who think otherwise think we are wrong, and we think that they are wrong.

In a comment below, response write for seven minutes (Hartmann says ten, but we're going for seven here) to tell us your answer to this question. Follow Hartmann's suggestions for response writing in exercise H on page 24. That is:

  • don't stop writing: write sentence, after sentence, after sentence
  • don't worry about grammar: provided you communicate your ideas in sentences, your response writing is a success
  • don't use a dictionary: it interrupts the flow of ideas in response to your topic
  • one response will lead to another: don't worry about staying on topic. This not academic writing like the paragraphs you wrote on a passion.

  2. Yes, because we can share our ideas to classmate which depends on their experience then we generate the best idea to make a decision.

  3. To make a decision, a certain amount of information is required. And one of a good ways to gather information is through a group discussion. When we discuss, we share our ideas. We broaden our horizon. Agreements will bring supporting ideas that might be the same, or differ from your own ideas. These ideas bolster your point. On the other hand, disagreement will provide new ideas that might convince you to change your decision. Nonetheless, both agreement and disagreement will make you reevaluate your thought. They will make you become more prudential. Therefore, a group discussion is a good way to recheck ideas before we decide on something.

  4. Yes, it is a good way to make decisions. This way people can exchange their ideas. Some might have an idea that other people in the group don't know or over look. However, before making a group discussion, it its better to do a research and find some information about the topic. So, you know what are you talking about.

  5. I think group discussions are a good way to make decision. It is because I can get the other information from the others. Some of the information might be different from what I have thought before. I can use new information to rethink my previous decision. This is possibly made my final decision better. If I am not sure about my decision I can consult the other people as well.

  6. My first idea is that "No," group discussions are not a good way to make decisions. Group discussion is a very good way to share ideas on a question. This is important because others might have ideas that we had never thought of which can, and should, prompt us to change our minds. For example, when we see that laws against drugs dealing and use only profit mafia groups and encourage official corruption, we might change our mind on deciding whether drugs like heroin, yaa baa and so on should be legal or illegal for adults to buy and use.

Group discussion is also very good for helping us to clarify and correct misunderstandings. Now I think I'm changing my mind. But once the facts are known as well they can be, effective leadership seems to me to require the leader making a decision that hopefully others will see is the right one, or at least support as members of a team, even they initially disagreed with it.

  7. Yes, they are because people in the group can share his or her own ideas for the meeting and help to make them a good decision which is included his or her several views and are accepted by everyone.

  8. Yes,it's a good way because you and your co-worker can generate different ideas and discuss the best way to make decisions for the group which is also the process of learning.

  9. Yes, group discussions are good way to make decision because when people share their ideas as well as listening to others', they have the opportunity to exchange information and review their own and others' ideas in order to give the reason to support.

  10. Yes, group decision helps gather several different ideas from people with different backgrounds. Having ideas from different perspectives means the group can come up with creative and fresh solutions. It also a great way for time management since we can get as many ideas as we want within limited time.

  11. Yes,I agree with this because difference people have difference idea. Some of the ideas maybe wrong but it can still be debateable. Sometimes, when you encounter a problem and have no idea on that problem, your friends can have another possible reason and view for that problem. People are not perfect, so to discuss and exchange information is the best way to remove some of the logic flaw. The group discussion also prevent another person to do something illogical.

  12. In my opinion, I think group discussion is good way to make decisions because we have brainstorming many ideas from many people to make something, which we want to do. Moreover we have change and transfer more information with other.
