According to "How connected car tech is eroding personal privacy," Bill Scannell is afraid of Car-Net system or the car-spy device which it's set up in his new Volkswagen Golf. This technology can check everything about your activities when you drive the car or you are in the car during traffic congestion; it records your behaviour when you drive and send the data to the centre of Volkswagen to analyse and research how to produce their products as much as possible for customers who buy their new cars and be safe when they drive. But in Scannell's view, he think he lose his privacy, such as talking, laughing, or other things. so he disagrees to use this device to record him and other drivers when they drive.

Should the car-spy device be set up in our car?
My answer is:
No, it shouldn't be set up because it erodes personal privacy and there are other ways to research on how to produce cars which are safe for customers when they drive.
I really disagree when I know that Volkswagen has set up the car-spy device to their products to record customers' behaviour. This device is a computer which record the datas, such as your acceleration, your braking, your travelling, or activities which might be at risk to be dangerous for drivers and passengers. But it also records your talking, or other things about your privacy which isn't necessary to record. This topic makes me think about the autonomous driving which is available in many new cars, such as Tesla, Mercedes Benz, BMW, or Volvo. Because the autonomous driving is the innovation of technology which is based on the research on what is the most effective way to protect the driver and passengers to avoid an accident. However, this is the new technology which is still needed to continually develop; in few months ago, I heard the news that an American driver died when he drove Tesla and used the autonomous driving system to control the car but it didn't stop automatically and then crashed a truck which was in front of the car.
Volvo launched their policy that in 2020 everyone won't die when they drive the Volvo. They have their own laboratory to do their research on how to protect both people inside the car and outside to avoid an accident. They concern on how to use a good material to strengthen their car bodies, survey the statistic which involve the number of accidents and find causes why they are happened, provide a lot of new technology such as lane keeping assist, cross traffic alert, collision waring with auto brake, etc. They found a lot of solutions before they produce the car and then serve to customers. This advanced technologies are also available in many new cars and many luxury brands are developing softwares which we can use with your smartphone. For example, you can use your smartphone to command your car to drop you and pick you up and it finds a plot to park itself, check where your car is and you can check your car status (lock, unlock, or your car is being stolen), or even you aren't necessary to drive but you can choose your destination where you want to go and just sitting! These technology are available for you to avoid an accident and injury, and make you feel convenient to use your own car.
However, you can't only rely on the new technology to help you but you must prepare to protect yourself when you drive. Maybe these technology are error in some days. You should avoid activities which might be dangerous for you and your passengers, such as drinking alcohol or using smartphone when you drive, and you must follow the rules of law because these can decrease number of accidents and death.

I agree with Oat's comment near the end of his response: alcohol is the killer drug in Thailand, and no matter how safe companies make cars, if these drug users have a couple of glasses or red wine with dinner and then get into their car to drive, nothing will protect other innocent road users from them, resulting in broken families and other pain.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if we need to sign a contract that allow to access to our information before we buy a car. It really unacceptable for me to records talking, or other things. It also reminded me of membership card systems and even social media it erodes our personal privacy somehow, we can’t deny that we sometimes can’t avoid it. For example, games in Facebook force you to agree to every permission it wants, if you want to access to the system.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Namwan. These days, more and more technological appliance inventors try their best to access our private information. They may claim that they have to protect us, our security and so on but sometimes they do it for their hidden purposes. However, it's okay if we let them to do so.
DeleteWell, i think the car-spy is helpful in developing and improving their products, also, increase understanding about customer behaviors. This might result in new innovation and better service and technology in the future. But for recording talking and others privacy things, i strongly disagree. Why do they need that information for?
ReplyDeleteAnd as Namwan comment, I think I would be okay if we can decide to allow the company to access our private information. As customers information is valuable for many companies, Volvo should pay for it, not getting it for free by spying us. What will we get in return for giving them our information that they could use for increasing their profits? If not money, maybe a little compliments like discount or extra service would be fine. And please, no recording talk. I think that will make customers feel better about car-spy.
I am thinking about the benefits of car-spy machine installed in car. I think the company might really want to take that information to built a better inner design and function to attract their customers which product development plays an important role to the success in marketing strategy. Another advantage is the recordings are a great source to be used when there is a dispute in a car accident.
