Painting Van Gogh by T. F. Chen, 1991 |
However, Hartmann limits her discussion to a much narrower set of art, starting with the image of the painting above on the opening page of chapter 3, and we too can probably ignore the difficult question of what art is, even if we do not limit ourselves here to the traditional visual and sculpted forms of art that are the subject of chapter 3 of Quest (2007, p. 71 - 104).
Write down your responses to Hartmann's questions on page 71, as below:
- Look at the picture. What images do you see in the painting? Are they realistic?
- What do you like or dislike about this painting? Why?
- Is it good art? Does it have artistic merit?

I see the image of 2 people on woman and one man. The man is doing his painting of the portrait of the woman. This painting is not realistic because the shape of woman's face is compost of geometry shapes like half of circle.
ReplyDeleteI really like the color choice of this picture and this may also reflect Van Gogh himself because the man is using the similar technique with him(in my opinion). However, I feel that the woman face looks somewhat creepy/disfigured.
In my opinion, I think that this picture is way better than another modern art. It may be bias since Van Gogh is well known and famous. Still, it is way better than another well-known art.
I saw the picture of someone who sat behind an easel to paint the portrait with acrylic technique while a girl with colorful clothing sat next to him. In the font of the picture I saw the vase with beautiful flowers, pineapple, and some fruits on a tray. Also, an orange, lemon on a table. These pictures are not realistic. It's more like portraits with painterly style.
ReplyDeleteI can't find the harmony within this picture, the picture of a girl in the front was tear up from somewhere else. The picture also lack of emphasis point because everything seem big and importance. On the others hand, I like the colorful painting because when I see it, I feel happy and refreshing.
It's a good art because I like it and I think good or bad it depend on viewer's perspective and it has artistic merit in term of technical skills.
I see two people. The one on the right is drawing a portrait of other people. The one on the left sitting behind a table with a plate of pineapple, orange and flower vase is looking to the right. The picture are not realistic. There are no apparent shading, no shadow, no depth. There are too much thing going on in the picture that it confuses me.
ReplyDeleteI don't like this picture. The color is too bright. Objects are out of proportion that it looks two dimensional. However, I like the details that he put in the painting on the left of the guy who is painting in the picture. I also like his pineapple.
It depends on the definition of art. Let's assume that art means the skill that acquired by practice doing something over and over. I don't think this is a good art. The picture looks rigid. The colors are monotonous— no gradient, shadow, or shading. It is not realistic. I'd prefer classic. I think it requires more skills to paint something that look exactly the same as the real things. This picture when comparing to classic art such as the Mona Lisa somehow make me think of Onement Vi.
I see the extra layer of the picture of the painter who is painting the picture of a lady. By inferring from the clothes they are wearing, my guess is they both would be wealthy westerners.
ReplyDeleteI don't think this paiting is realistic in term of the technique he used-- no shading etc., but he might piant it to illustrate the real situation. I don't know what technical he was using but i think it created another dimension to the painting which make it more interesting. I find his choice of color energizing. The proportion of the lady's face is strange but I think the painter did it on purpose.
Art is very subjective. I dare not to say if it's good or bad art as I don't have much knowledge about it. But I think it's interesting piece of art and I'm eager to know what's behind this artwork.
In the image, I see two people. The first one wearing darker cloths on the right of the image is painting a portrait, while another woman with vivid outfit sitting near the first person. There are also two half-length portraits in the picture too. I think this painting is not realistic because of the vivid color, the shape of woman's face and no shading.
ReplyDeleteI like this picture. Actually I don't know much about art or painting, but looking at this picture as a whole and as a part bring me different feelings. Also, I think the left half is less realistic than the right one in term of the color choice and the line the painter use.
I don't know what is art but I think the picture that make people feel and interpret in different ways like this picture is a good art and has artistic merit.
In this image, I see a painter who sit and draw picture and a young lady who stand behind the painter. There are some fruits and a flower vase on the table next to the young lady. Also that, both of them wear beautiful clothes. I think they aren't realistic because this picture seems to be cartoon with plentiful color.
ReplyDeleteI like this painting because I like those color and the color match with each others perfectly, especially young lady's dress.
Normally, good art is judge by personal decision. In my opinion, I think this is a good art because it imply a young lady who has 2 faces which the artistic give the meaning related to social habit. But I think that artistic doesn't have merit because this picture is too simplify.
I think this picture is realistic because it contains two people, one woman and one man, who are very similar like other people. I think Van Gogh drew this picture to send a message about the painting art in his period and its magnificence. I know that the early life of Van Gogh was not successful about his painting because no people liked his works. But after that he became a famous artist of the world and many people would like to see his painting. I think it depends on personal's perception that you can understand about the painting or it makes you confuse. In my opinion, this painting is beautiful because it contains appropriately components, such as colours, objects, position, which are very clear to understand about the painting. I don't know much about painting and also the Van Gogh's works but I like this one because I can understand what the picture is. I don't know how to judge a painting that it's good or bad but I think if I can understand a painting which an artist would like to say, I think it is a good work.
