UK education business

What I read

According to "Inside the secret and lucrative world of 'the super tutor'", the UK earns £17.5 billion yearly from education business as several parents believe that studying in top British school is "valuable trading cards in an international industry” therefore they willingly spend much money (ranging from £40-£1000 per hour) hiring “super tutor” for their children. Demand on this service is highly increasing as some tutors are offered 2-3 urgent case a year. Moreover, the tutor sometimes is hired to prepare long-term educational plan for someone who isn’t born yet. Asia, Middle East, eastern Europe and Russian are the majority of customers. High benefit comes with high pressure and tension hence the tutor has to discuss with a family before making an agreement.

My response
Investing in education is invaluable because an education is a significant fundamental for living and working. Having good education opens to good opportunity. In addition, knowledge is an intangible asset which be with us forever and nobody can steal it. As a result, if you can afford it, it is worth to invest in my opinion. Having read this article shows me two interesting points: high competition in education and booming UK education business.

Firstly, competition in education is extremely high in many countries. I don't know much about other countries however in my country (Thailand), to be accepted to high quality and standard school, parents have to reserve their children place since they are not born. Furthermore, some schools require supporting fund even though children are completely qualified following requirements. This clearly represents unfairness and failure of education system. Poor children who have potential and ability, lose their opportunity which they are deserved it. Another obvious example is that many Thai students have no time for relaxing and doing their favorite activities or exercises, resulting in lack of experience outside classroom and life skills because they have to take additional courses such as mathematics and physics. I think the reason why they have to study a lot is that everybody does therefore if someone doesn't go along with this behavior, he/she probably get unsatisfied result. Secondly, the UK generates a large amount of income from education business. The main source of that income comes from a number of an international student such as revenue from English language test and higher tuition fee charged to an international student.

My question for readers
What do think about charging much higher tuition fee to an international students than local students?

  1. Charging higher tuition fees to the international student than the local is a good way to earn a mount of money in order to support their own stutents. Therefore, the local students and their parents don't have to pay a lot of money for institution likes in Thailand. I really hope that, in Thailand, the goverment could finally find a way out for the the education problem you said in the article.

I feel glad that I grew up outside Bangkok. In my province, Nakhon Phathom, the tuition fees is not as high as in Bangkok, so my parents didn't have to worry much about earning lots of money to support my education.

    1. We have something in common. I also study in high school at Nakhon Phathom. I do not know about the tuition fee there, but I think the advantage of studying outside Bangkok is there was less attractive places than Bangkok. However, it did not improve my learning skills much because I spent most of my time playing football with my friends after my long day of studying. I also spend my time on weekend at Siam.

So I think that the tuition fee in England is too expensive as well as in The U.S., but I quite understand it one of the ways to get money from people outside their countries. I have never thought of studying in England. There are other choice available to us for getting good education.

  2. Charging more tuition fees to international students is not a good idea for me because education should be open for everyone who want to learn. They will use this money to benefit local students can not be the reason to charge more money, it should be the government who have to pay for the institution, not the students.

In many countries, the government support the money for education institution, cause tuition to be reduce or free for every students. They do this because they know that education should available for everyone. Even you do not have money, you can learn. Not only rich people who can learn in a top rank institution, everyone has equal chance to get in. Moreover in some countries, such as Japan has a discount for international students for letting them to go to study in their country.

    1. I agree with you so I figure I would rather write my reply here.

The very high education fee - for not only international students, but for everyone - is not reasonable. Everyone should have a equivalent chance to study. But what is happening is upside down: the smart guy who has genius brain to learn in high degree but is poor, he or she can't get the education. In contrast, the one who is less intelligent but was born on the silver and the gold, this one get the higher education. I hope this problem would be fixed, and there would be a lot more experts to develop our world.

  3. I know a lot countries around the world with same situation. For example Canada - the education there for foreigner students more expensive than for the local at least twice. The same situation in Russia, but education in Russia is quite bad now (and not so many foreigners wont to study in very cold country). It's interesting, in Russia we have very expensive education, but only few people go to study abroad. A lot of potential students choose Moscow, still. Usually, only children of very reach parents can study abroad (but Russia is very reach country, still). But, since I moved in Bangkok, I met a lot of Thai students who will go to study in universities in Europe, the US or China. And it's very interesting for me, why study abroad is so popular in Thailand (Bangkok)?

    1. I think there are 2 main reasons why study abroad is popular in Thailand. One reason is that they can ask for higher salary or get the higher position in career by degree graduation from European countries or the US. Secondly, it is an effective way of improving english because as you can see, there is a big different between thai and english language, but there is not much opportunity to use english in daily life in Thailand. Moreover, Learning english from native speaker will decrease misunderstanding of language.

    2. I agree. It is very common for Thais that the ability to speaking English can increase their salary.

For me, There are the other 2 reasons why Thai students decide to study aboard. First, experience, It is very clear that studying oversea can enhance our confidence and critical thinking (the second one is something that our education system never cast the light on, but, for me, It is one of the vital skills for learning process)

Secondly, the variety of field in Thailand is less than Europe or the US. There is a lot of fields that very important, but in Thailand, we still lack teachers who specialize in this field. For example, my friend decided to study art history and curating for art exhibitions in the UK as the result of there is no such course in Thailand.

  4. I think charging more tuition fees to international students is not a good idea as everyone should spend the same money to have the same education. But,if you want to study hard to get a degree or not is depend on yourself.

Because there is the high competition in the education now, therefore,in Taiwan, many parents sent their children to cram schools in an attempt not to lose at the starting point which also gives great pressure to children.
I don't know if there are cram schools in Thailand or not?

    1. In Thailand, we have a ton of cram schools, I used to go in many crams school. Each school has their own particular subject. Most students attend those schools because It makes them go to university easier as result of teachers who have more experience than public schools.

So why we have school for?, I think the education system in Thailand should change the way of teaching students in school, they should also increase the quality of teaching in school so that student would not spend more money in cram schools, which is some place is more expensive than in public schools.
