Facebook users private information leak

What I read

In "Facebook data - do we get what we deserve?", Facebook is said to be shameful from the data breach. After around 50 million users information such as personal details, mobile numbers, conversation and IP address were used inappropriately by Cambridge Analytica. Even though some users have deactivated their account, It seems to be meaningless to do because data could also be tracked from their companions. Frederike Kaltheuner (2018) concerned that apart from Facebook, there are many websites still use customers data improperly to hypothesize users though and lifestyle especially free applications and services. Chris Combemale (2018) said this method could destroy customers trust easily which companies who hold lots of customers private information should anxious about.

My response

This article reminded me of how important of my personal information. If you work in marketing areas, you might know how customers data gathering from. I have already know that many companies collect customers behaviors by using their spending records and loyalty card which I think is an acceptable way to get my individual information to plan and develop their products just though myself while Facebook's way is different.

On the other hand, Facebook users data are compiled without knowing from customers. It is assembled by quiz applications which many users use it for enjoyment in order to share their result with their network. After that, quiz creators use that information for many purposes without permission such as age, a city where the user lives in or personal interest. Moreover, they can reach our friend details and person who we are chatting with.

Personally, we should be more careful before signing up or registering in any application. We have to check the list of information that will be taken carefully and uncheck some of them which we do not want to share. Furthermore, we should not put too many private details on our profile such as family members, personal number or a copy of ID card on social media in order to prevent our information will be used improperly.

My question

  1. I'm not worried too much by this. I would worry a lot more if invasive governments made laws that, for example, required users to give their ID card or other identification when signing up. As it is, Facebook is just my name, which means little to those who don't know me, but the real evil could come if unjust laws meant I had to give Facebook or some other organization a copy of my passport when I signed up, even worse if I had to provide fingerprints or some other given identity information.

Bank's excellent summary interested me enough that I went to his source, which also includes an alarming video, but I think it might have overstated the cause for concern. In fact, I thought it was dishonest: yes, there is a lot of personal data about me on Facebook, but only I can download all of that, and my friends can only download what I've chosen to share with them – the guy in the video on the BBC News source had clearly chosen, perhaps without knowing it, to share a lot. I also let my friends see my phone number, so that is available for them to download, but they have that anyway, so it's no big deal. Strangers cannot download my data.

Having said that, I would like to see more people using more secure apps for communication, such as WhatsApp and Signal, both of which, but Signal especially, are protected from government snooping by powerful encryption, as is the data on my smartphone, something that the FBI and others are not happy about, but they should not be happy. The real threat to privacy does not seem to me to be from private companies like Facebook but from governments with far too much power, which is often abused. Facebook is sensitive to customer concerns for the very good reason that it wants to make money from freely chosen exchanges. Despotic governments do not share those concerns and as a result are more often far more evil than private businesses.

  2. At First, I didn’t care much about personal detail on facebook because I do not tell anyimportant things on facebooks. I do not like to share my personal life with other people. I just liked facebook pages I interested in and some photos I was tags. I barely post by myself. Therefore, this new did not impact me. I have registered many quizs just for fun. Moreover, I also admire benefit of using behavior data. Recently, many company try hard to develop producrs and services to meet customers needs by using unstructure data or behavior data from social media using. It is benefit us because we will be offered products that match our need when company add more input to analze our needs.

However, I also reconize risks of using big data. First, it is so powerful. Donald thumb also win the election by big data analytic. That means this effective tool can also control citizen behaviors unconsciously. Second, people do not know what information facebooks collect from us. If facebook collect data from private messages, it is too risky. What if we provide some confidental data like number of saving accounts and passwords. How we know if data will not in hand of scammers. Goverment should set strickly law to prevent company take advantages fron us.

  3. It is good article to remind me about using online application. As my experience many companies try to gather customer information which I think it is not a bad way. Personally I always carefully use Facebook, for example, like the interesting page, follow news and chatting with my friend rather than providing my private information. So. I might not much worry about it.

  4. At first I read this news, I visit my facebook, check my information security, then I realize that I put many information in my facebook page. Most of social medias invite us to inform our personal information and we cannot know what they do with our data. This is issue should be addressed and we should more concern about this silence problem.

According to your post, I recognize that credit card company and bank always call me for a new credit card or loaning that I don't want and am very annoyed. Bank and credit card company should have an ethic and protect their customer information security. I don't know how to protect ourselves from this problem but I suggest the government should take a role to protect our personal information.

  5. Nowadays when I want to do something about registering or other things. Mostly they are linked to Facebook. Almost all the website that I have gone through, they have options to sign up by Facebook. Definitely, It is easy for me because I tied my facebook account and I just clicked it to connect my facebook account with another website since it saves a lot of time to signing up. I am not worried much about the information actually because I did not put my personal information much. But I think Facebook should secure our personal information because some people put a lot of personal information on it and do not want any agency or marketing media to see it.
