Robots will be more human in the near future

What I read

In http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-43215863 , Ghosh Pallab. (2018) says that nowadays, there are many robots that can do easy and repetitive task at the factory every single day. Surprisingly, researchers are developing to build robots to deal with a real messy world such as recognising and understanding people which are more complicated and higher level. There is an example to give you a better understanding about developing the robots. Dr. Thomaz has developed code to help the robots people’s movement or expressions to point that they are welcome to talk ; however, it is so challenging since there are other factors that no one can predict such as noise and people around the environment. Therefore, she and her team have to think about how to control and deal with these kinds of thing.

My response

In my perspective, there are both benefits and drawbacks for building robots. First, I would like to thank  for an advancement of technology and researchers at the University of Texas Austin to develop them that bring our society to be better. These day they can help people do simple things at homes and workplaces ; therefore, we save a lot of time from the work they do and have more time to do more important stuff. Moreover, they can do work thoroughly and neatly than people do . For instance, I heard the news about using them in a various kind of surgery in hospitals as well as in restaurants. Currently , some of restaurants are using them to make or serve food to customers. They can make food by using the same proportion of ingredients all the time since the owner need to code and set it and that lead to same flavour or taste every time ; however, it also depends on how fresh of the meats and ingredients are. Also, the robots can help serving food. I like this idea since some waiters and waitresses are so slow to serve food. Customers do not have to worry about slow services anymore and the owner can get rid of this kind of problem that they complain. On the other hand, if every hospital and restaurant use them to run their businesses, this will affect a lot of people who work in these kinds of industry. They will be unemployed right away and need to search for other jobs to make them survive. Since they can do work better than people do, it is possible that these industry will use them instead of people in the near future. Fortunately, robots are really expensive and if owners of the restaurants or hospitals do want to use them, the owners need a lot of money to buy them and it maybe causes a drop in profit for many years.

My question

What do you think when intelligence robots have their own mind  and can deal with real world situation?

  1. Ben's question reminded me of a comment I made earlier today on Bank's blog post about the film Black Panther. In that comment, I responded to Bank's ideas about racism, extending them to sexism, which most you are probably familiar with, and also to speciesism, which might be less well-known.

After reading Ben's response and question, I'm now thinking that maybe the set of prejudices to oppose should be extended a bit more. If a robot or computer has its own mind, doesn't that make it a person that deserves the respect we normally give to persons such as ourselves? And more worryingly, if the AI is more intelligent and more of a person than we are, should it be given greater rights than we give to human persons?

Ben has made me think of interesting questions about our identity as humans and as persons, and about what, if anything, makes us more special than other things.

As usual, I look forward to more of your responses.

  2. After reading your response and question, the first thing coming in my mind are the movies about intelligent robot. They are many but I think of Terminator and I'm quite sure everyone know it. As in terminator, robots are very intelligent and some of them have their emotion and thought like us. And that scares me because some of them are adversary to us(I can't remember how and why). Imagine the world where there are robots like in Terminator everywhere, it's quite scary.

Not to mention Terminator, after I read Peter's comment, if robots are more intelligent and have emotion, I think robots should be respected and given right because by having these two factors - intelligence and emotion - they are another persons like us who need respect and right. But the right given to them shouldn't be greater than us, otherwise it might happen like in the movie. When they are like us, we couldn't control them anymore like we couldn't know what other people think.

Robot should be given respect and right only if they have emotions. However, I think robot should have only intelligence, not emotions. And by not having emotions, right isn't needed. Otherwise they might take us to real Terminator.

  3. The comments from Peter and Melon have made me think about the right that people should or should not give to him. In this moment it is pretty hard to answer this question since we are in the early stage. However, I do agree with Melon that people should give rights and respect to robots if they have both intelligence and emotion like real us. I think researchers and scientists want robots to help us in the way of working or helping us. I do not think that they aim to build emotional robots. It sounds weird if one day robots have emotions and we talk with them like our friends.

  4. In my point of view, having a robots that can think by their own intelligent mind is great for many reasons. First, we can reduce lots of human error that made by human. For example, In the factory businesses, we can let robots take control in most of the working procedures that used to handle by human,we only leave 2-3 people to supervise the overall processes, that mean we cut a lot expenses and problems from managing people. Second, our life will be easier. We can manage things faster and have more time to spend with necessary businesses.

  5. AI is coming and is a trend in current situation, I heard AI news in many times and I also concern about a dangerous of AI if they can think and do work as human. Human has to adjust their abilities to work in advance job that AI can't do and the government should control a research boundary about AI for protection human breed.
