The Bottle of the water does not purify!!

What I read

In "Plastic particles found in bottled water", David Shukman (2018) reported that chemistry team of State University of New York in Fredonia have found that in many water brands which are sold around the world are contaminated with plastic particles. The researchers created the experiment by using Nile dye in order to find and prove even though the false positive is likely to occur because the micro-organism can be changed by its like plastic particle. However, they assumed that each bottles must be checked and qualified before selling. Unfortunately, ninety-three percent of the brands were contaminated with pieces of plastic, and no one can guarantee that they are not harm to people because plastics are foreign body which can cause many problems in human health systems such as gastrointestinal tract.

My response

This article provides useful information to modern lifestyle of urban people because they usually buy the bottle of water for drinking, and they trust in every brand they drink. As a result, not too much people realize about this water might contaminate. From my perspective, this research can remind public health organizations to check and qualify the quality of them in order to protect consumers' right and health. Moreover, most people might be interesting because it has an direct effect on daily life and their bodies.
Although, few brands are randomized into this experiment, but I think they should examine in more water brands. Most brands which are in the experiment debate that it tends to have false positive in this examination which means the result seems to be true, but it is not. Therefore, it needs more deeper investigation, so it must be great if the government offer funding and any laboratory equipment to scientists find out the truth.
Furthermore, even purchasing water to consume is generally, but there is the another method to avoid its and save people's life. For example, water purifier can utilize instead of buying plastic bottle of water, and it is cheaper in the long term. That is because people can trust in that, and drink as much as they want.  However, the price of this equipment is quite high, so some people cannot afford it.
For this reason, that must be better if the government can support the money to people to buy it.

My question

If you were the government, what would you do to solve this problem?

  1. I have heard this kind of news that plastic bottles should not be used more than one times because plastic particles can be released from it which might cause cancer symptom. Surprisingly, I have just known that it also contains pieces of plastic in most drinking water's bottles !!!!! As you said, Plastic might cause many diseases to human which should be concerned. Therefore, I should bring my own metal drinking bottles with me every day instead of buying a new drinking water to save cost and prevent myself from cancer.

  2. In my opinion, using plastics is inevitable since almost every product's packaging nowadays has a lot to do with plastics. I agree with bank's comment about bringing metal bottles and drink from it instead of plastic bottle. Moreover, to refrain from all plastic particles possible, you might have to cook every meal by yourself and use metal box to contain it which is hard to do it everyday. Perhaps there is a study about some metal particles that can cause cancer too. My advise is, try your best to reduce the risk but if it's required tremendous efforts of you and make you upset, Just ignore it. Eventually we all die in one way or another.

  3. Now I'm worried about my plastic water bottles. I usually refill the same five-litre bottles from a machine at my condo. I've heard that its actually safe to drink the tap water in Bangkok, as it is in my own and many other countries, but it seems to me to have an unpleasant taste which is not in the filtered water from the machine downstairs. At AUA, I have been using the same Singha bottle for a year or so. I fill it from AUA's supply every morning, and that lasts me the day.

Although I like Jane's suggestion, and used to have a filter device at my last home, it's easy to use the machine downstairs or the teachers' lounge at work, so I won't change my habits, although I might worry a little more.

I'm not sure that I agree that its the government's job to police these sorts of things. Provided that the companies do not make false or misleading statements to customers, I think the market, not dictator public officials, should decide these things: consumers such as myself can effect change by our purchase decisions.

  4. I mostly drinking from plastic bottle. On the bright side, they are many people drink from plastic bottle too. If the presence of plastic particle affect human gastrointestinal tracts, there will be a lot of patients in gastrointestinal departments.

However, I agree with Jane's suggestion to avoid using it if possible such as using filter device and cups. Because we don't know for sure that they cause harmful effects on us. Moreover, as stated in the article, they didn't sure that it isn't a false positive either.

For Jane's question, I think that FDA should revised the regulation if there is strong evidences that plastic particle can cause deleterious outcome.
