You are what you eat.

What I read

On "This is your body on fast food", Christy Brissette (2018) emphasizes his rule that 80:20 ratio of healthy food and junk food for healthier life. There are previous studies show that junk food affects metabolism enzyme that causes of many non communicable disease (NCDs) for example obesity, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and stroke, and also affects mental disease as depression. How many meal of unhealthy food you eat relates to how many disease you get, however, almost 50% of American adult remain have a junk food at least once a week. Healthy food consumption has more advantage to health than junk food and thus should eat them as much as possible.

My response

"You are what you eat." this sentence is always in my mind when I choose my food. Last year I noticed that my body had already changed, I am not young as I was. Because I faced some problem that I gained weight a little bit even if my eating habit and daily activities were same. Furthermore my mother, my grandfather and my uncle have diabetes, which means I have a high risk to have diabetes too. After I realized the changing and my genetic risk, I rethought about my health and changed my way to have a meal. I have more healthy food and less unhealthy food. However I face other problems that healthy food is difficult to buy in my life because there is less restaurant sell it and if I can find any restaurant sells healthy food, it is too expensive to buy. It reflects that we do not have many choices to select the best thing for our health.

When I select some beverage in a convenience store, I always have a question that why sweet green tea is more expensive than non-sugar green tea. But last year I heard a good news that Thailand endorsed sugar sweetened beverage tax that sweetened beverage have to pay a higher tax rate than non sweet beverage. As we know, sugar is the cause of diabetes and obesity and Thais eat more sugar than we should eat, 6 teaspoons per day. This tax is the way that the government uses to promote healthy beverage for reducing NCDs. World Health Organization also recommend this policy is the best buy policy to reduce NCDs. However, it is probably not effective in Thailand because the tax rate is low, it might not change consumer behavior; and therefore policy monitoring should be done soon.

Do you realize that the price of soft drink or sweet green tea is changed?

If you answer is “No”, this sugar tax might not affect our behavior.

  1. As I am enjoying my morning Colombian drug hit (No, not cocaine, a large coffee), I thought that there was a connection between the ideas in Gaii's chosen source and the ideas in the popular article about empathy genes that Yok and Pom both chose to respond to.

In the different ways, both show how our identity, us, is determined by things outside we have no control over, such as our genes, or things outside of ourselves, such as the food we eat. And that thought led me to a Buddhist teaching, but perhaps someone else would like to take up that idea.

  3. I didn't eat fast food last week because my mother made breakfast and dinner. I agree with the quote " You are what you eat ". For example, most of Americans are a little bit fat compared to Asians since most of the time they have junk food : hamburgers, fries and carbonated drinks. As a result, Americans will get a disease easily.

However, there are not only how to eat but also how they behave. that cause a disease. Working out can help them get out from a disease.

  4. I usually eat healty food because I think fast food and junk food aren't good for my health. I will eat fast food when I don't have time to eat food, it's 1-2 times per month. And I think almost Thai people don't eat fast food because we have been cultivated to eat rice and eating with family.

  5. I can say that I'm a carb(ohydrates) lover. But as Gaii said, I grow old and my metabolism doesn't work so well as in teenage, so I have to control my diet: eat less carb and sugar and eat fruit and vegetables instead. I found out that it was hard for the first time because I don't like vegetables much, but after that I can do better. Not only eating but exercise is also important. Oh, don't forget sleeping.

  6. I totally agree with you because I also realise myself have gained weight and some disease after I ate lots of unhealthy food, desserts and buffet food. Same as my mom, She used to be like me. Then, she got high blood pressure. After that, she has changed her diets and done yoga, she is getting better in health and younger face than her friends.
