Poison is harm eventually!

What I read

In "Woman dies after having bee-sting therapy" (2018). Apitherapy or bee sting therapy has been created for one thousand year, and human utilize it for reducing inflammatory, such as arthritis. Researcher does not support the benefit of Apitherapy. Also, it seems to more harm because they have poison and can lead anaphylaxis shock. This kind of shock occurs when the body receive strange allergen then express severe allergic symptoms, so the emergency care must be prompted immediately. Moreover, when it worsen, cerebrovascular emboli and multiple organ usually occur. Unfortunately, the woman, who always receives the bee sting therapy, she had anaphylaxis shock at the clinic where have not efficiency emergency treatment and equipment. As a result, she has passed away. Lastly, scientists still cannot prove the genuine benefit from Apitherapy.

My response

In my opinion, bees should not be used for treat any symptoms because it induce highly risk, and mortality rate. Furthermore, it is supported by Amena Warner, Head of Clinical Services for Allergy UK, said "The public need to be very aware of the unorthodox use of allergens such as bee venom. This will come with risk and, in susceptible individuals, can lead to serious life threatening reactions." I agree that the severe and fasten response from body when get allergy is too dangerous.

In addition, this article remind me to think about Thai medical treatment. Nowadays, complementary medicine in Thailand, such as acupuncture and having Thai herbal medicine, is widely used, and some people prefer to get involved with it. Although, scientific method cannot prove it, but they still believe that they will have better symptoms. As one of healthcare provider, I always disagree with complementary medicine that is because they have not been approved by science, and it is so incredible to trust.

Moreover, most people are likely to have worse symptoms when they use any un-scientific methods. The chemical in their body are changed gradually that lead the organ working un-coordinated. Also, kidney and liver functions are the worsen because the liver function is destroying and metabolic chemical substances, and both of organ function can show by laboratory result. From my aspect, this kind of medicine patterns are not sustainable, and the huge disadvantages will happen with their body in soon. Therefore, it would be better if people come to see the doctor and believe in the proved things more.

My question

1. Have you ever used any complimentary medicines?

2. What kind of them do you use?

  1. Although I think that people should be allowed to use complementary medicines if they want to, I also agree with Jane that they are usually at best a total waste of money, and can often be harmful. Unfortunately, scientific medicine often can't help, so it's understandable why people believe in the unbelievable, but any belief about the world has to be backed by solid evidence if it is to have any worth, and most complementary medicine has no such support. It is as sensible as believing gods or ghosts, which also have zero solid evidence.

I'm reminded of an interesting study done a few years ago by Harvard University researchers. Many people believe that praying for sick people helps them. The medical researchers at Harvard wanted to learn the truth, so they did a study of patients recovering from heart surgery. The results are very interesting, and did surprise me a bit. You can read them for yourself in the abstract of the research paper, which was published in the American Heart Journal in April, 2006: Study of the Therapeutic Effects of Intercessory Prayer (STEP) in cardiac bypass patients: a multicenter randomized trial of uncertainty and certainty of receiving intercessory prayer.

    1. Papers published in academic journals do often have long titles – this one is particularly long. If you wrote it in your summary paragraph, you already be up to 24 words!

    2. As I thought about Jane's response, I was also reminded of my favourite work by the Buddha, but perhaps someone else will mention that wise piece of thinking.

    3. Thank you, Peter for your response. This article, which you have shared, is so wonderful because cardiac patients are my specific interesting area, and this kind of treatment should be help them to relieve from the suffer in soon.

Thank you for your replying. It is great to share our idea to each other.

  2. I always go to massage, which is one kind of complementary medicine that I believe, for muscle pain relief. Furthermore sometime I use Thai traditional medicine such as turmeric (ka-min-chan) for dyspepsia, kariyat (fha-ta-lai-jone) for common cold because both of them are proofed as a alternative medicine. However, there are a lot of unproofed complementary medicine in Thailand. Mor Sang phenomenon is a best example that Thais always believe other people more than scientific evidence. Nonetheless, I think similar to Peter that patient have a right to choose any kind of treatment but they should know harm and advantage of the treatment before they choose it. Unfortunately, our country lack of any accessible and reliable information. If you search name of herbal medicine in google, you may get a lot of false information and a believable data is difficult to find. Any health care providers and Ministry of Public Health(MOPH) have a role to inform and educate patient and people. MOPH also should regulate a law for controlling treatment quality and eliminating fake alternative medicine.

    1. Your response is so useful to me. I know about the herbal medicine, but in practical most physicians always rule out that it is steroid contamination. However, sometimes I also used turmeric for relief abdominal pain. I think it need more sciencetification to prove.
Also, I agree with you that patients have entire rights to choose their own medical treatment.

Thank you for you response. It is nice to share you ideas.
