Our responses

As you were reading, you might have been thinking to yourself things like:
  • Yes, that's right.
  • No way. I don't agree with that.
    or
  • Really? Is that right?
This critical assessment of what we read is an important skill, and one that the following exercise practices.

Bixby and Scanlon's questions

  1. Read each statement based on "Sports Fans and Identity". Do you agree or disagree with the statement? Or are you unsure about it?
Think of a comment or example to explain your agreement or disagreement.

    a. When you are a fan of a particular team, at a game or event, you instantly feel that you have thousands of friends. (Agree? Disagree? Not sure?)
    b. If a sports team is a very important part of a fan's identity, winning is extremely important. (Agree? Disagree? Not sure?)
    c. Winning a championship changes the way fans feel about themselves for a while. (Agree? Disagree? Not sure?)

  2. Why do you think fans continue to support a team that does poorly year after year?

  1. I'm not sure that I agree with the first statement, that you instantly feel you have thousands of friends as a sports fan at an event. I might feel some connection if I went to such an event, but I wouldn't think of those poeple as friends. We might become friends, but wouldn't actually be friends. It reminds me of when I was in primary school. We had a sports day every year, and one year a guy who I really didn't like, and who didn't normally like me, got excited, put his arm around my neck and told me that we were friends now: I didn't feel quite that close to him. We were both enjoying the day, and were perhaps more friendly (adjective) than usual, but not actually friends (noun).

I've never really been very interested in following sports, so I don't know how important winning is. I guess it is pretty important, but as the following question suggests, a lot of people remain loyal fans even though their team loses year after year after year.

I'm more inclined to agree with the third statement, that winning does change the way fans feel about themselves, at least for a short time. I remember that when my mother's favourite player won at golf, or her favoured team won the cricket, she felt herself a more generous, successful person. It was a good time to ask for extra pocket money.

  2. 1a) I agree with it because I have felt that before, when I go to the concert or event of my favorite singer or actor. I always share the same feeling and same interest with others, We cheer and shout the same word or sing the same song and we have to show everything to our favorite that we are support them.
2a) Personally, It doesn't important for me, I just want to support the people or team I like and want to cheer them up even though they have a bad time.
3a) Yes victory could change the feeling of fans in a short terms however to see their progress is more important for any fans than victory.

    2) As I said, the real fans are support people they love in bad or good time. They always stay beside people they support such as K-pop fans, Soccer fans or J-Pop fans. If you just cheer them because they win the match, you might not a real fan of them.

  3. A Yes, I agree with this statement because sport fan always feel that there are many people who have a same agenda and goals with them.
B Umm, I don't sure about this, not only winning but also losing are important. In our life, we have a day our life is up and down, when we success or fail we can learn its and it's better to learn its together with others.
C I agree with this as my answer in question B, we always change when we win or lose.

2 Because they think they are the part of the team and when them lose the game, sport fans think they also lose together with player and other sport fan. It's look like a royalty.

  4. 1.1 I agree with that because when numbers of people sharing same interests. There will be some kind of energy among them and make them to be friends.
1.2 I agree with it because, as they consider themselves as a part of the team, winning will give them pride and have good feeling about themselves.
1.3 I agree because,at that time of winning, they might feel like they win too, so the will feel that they
    have accomplished somethings.

2 I think that they have some loyalty to their team ,and when their team do poor performance, they feel sorry about them and want to support them.

  5. 1. a. I absolutely agree with that because when I watched the Thai volleyball team with others, even though we did not know each other before. We could be team, help each other without any curious.
    b. I disagree with this statement. The wining should deserve prize, award and honest. However, the losing team, they do their best also, so everyone should encourage them to do not give up to practice and challenge the others next time.
    c. Yes, I agree. Sport fans always feel happy with their favorite teams when they win that make them so respectful to the team and players.
    2. They always trust in the team, and think that the teams are so smart and hard working to win. Also, they have hope in order to encourage themselves to believe in teams.

    a. Yes, I agree. For example, when we choose to be a fan of specific team, we also get a friends that support the same team regardless they have known each other before.

    b. No, I didn't agree.
Although winning is the thing that fans really want, it is not the most important factor. Instead of winning, they can enjoy team's performance, cheering together and good vibe while being together for the same purpose.

    c. I agree. As they feel as p part of the team they are fans of, winning a championship will definitely encourage fans as they are achieving the same prize.

    2. They might enjoy the good friends, good vibes when cheering together rather than winning the game. Moreover, they might enjoy more about the hope of winning rather than support the team that always win.

  7. 1a) I am not sure about it because when I am a fan of a team, I just feel there are a lot of people who think the same way as me but they are not my friends. However, it is easier to make friends who have the same in common.
2b) I disagree about it because it is very hare to win every games. The more important thing is to feel relate with their sport team and want to cheer them up and want to see their improvement and progression.
3c) I agree with it because when we cheer a team, we feel that we are part of the team. Therefore, we will feel good when the team win.

    2. It depends on reason they poor. If they poor because accident, such as, main player sick and cannot find other to play with that position is ok because after the main player recover. They will win agian in the future. However, if they loss without good reason and no hope to win the future, most fans won't continue to to cheer up them.

  8. 1. a.) Yes, I agree. According to my own experience, I support spur foot ball team. Even though I don't know the person before I was talking but when we know that we support as the same team. we was becoming friend easily.when I talk in blog, website or having conversation, there are many person who are support same team always share idea with me.

b.) It is really important because wining is the goal for the team but if the team that I support lose, I would continually support them.

c.) Yes, I agree. It change many aspect we proud about the team that we support. We

    2. May be some fans have loyalty. Whatever the team win or lost they still support them.

  9. 1.a.Yes I agree, for example when you are in the game and people around you wear the same team t-shirt as you, that make you feel like you have an army around you. Supporting the same team, having the same goal, aiming to cheer your team together. Finally, you feel like they are all on the same side as you and become your friends.
    b. I'm not sure about this one. I wouldn't say winning is extremely important. Yes winning is matter but if the team lost, we will be continuing to support the team. It is just normal to win sometimes and loose sometimes. But the fan is still that team supporter. I think that is the real fan's identity to be the supporter.
    c. Yes I do agree with this statement. If my team won I will probably feel good, happy and confident about myself because I am in the winning side and that makes me proud of my team and myself.
    2. I think because fans made their choice, which team they want to be on, which team they want to support and it's all about Royalty, Passion and Love.

  10. 1a. I agree with this. For example, if you are football fan, you will have many people that watch the same matches with you. They share their moments about his team and spend lots of time together.
1b. I agree with this because fan will feel like to be a part of their team, if they win. It might inspire fan to do something or be something that related to their team.
1c. I agree with this because fans always feel that they are a part of their team. They might feel like they are winner and powerful for a while

    2. Because they love their team and they hope one day team will be better.

  11. I agree with the statement that If a team won, the fans would call themselves " We " but if a team lost, they would call themselves " they " . When I am a sports fan of a particular team, I feel that I have thousands of friends. For example, when I go to a football match and I meet a lot of fans, I feel that I have more friends right away. Also, winning is important for fans. If a sports team win the match, we are so glad and happy that they can do it. Winning a championship can change the way fans feel. If they lose, we will be so disappointed and sad. Some fans still support a team who does poorly because maybe few on team member are great and do very well. Therefore, fans still are loyal and trust that one day they can win a match.

  12. 1. I agree with the statement. I was one of the Kop, Liverpool football team's fans in my teenage period. I got along more easily with one of my friends who loved watching football matches than the ones who did not.
    a. I also agree with this statement because we have the same interest.
    b. I totally agree with the statement because the winning shows how much effort the team we support put into and how good strategy the team follow.
    c. I agree with but I think it not too much change their feelings.

1b. The winning is extremely important, I really agree with that because It makes fans support their team when team will they are happy and enjoy the game for this team forever.
1c. I agree with winning a championship makes fan feel happy, more confident and more pound.
2.The fans continue for supporting because if their like the team they will support it forever and hope their team will win again.
