Is it legal to force women to wear high heels at work?

Source background

According to "Is it legal to force women to wear high heels at work?," Nicola Thorp, working for a City Firm in London, was told to go home on her first day working as a corporate receptionist just because she wore flat shoes. And she could come back to work only if she accepted to wear high heels that were two-four inches. Claire Bates & Justin Parkinson the reporters also tell us that she denied to do so and promoted the petition against the firm's treat. Thorp's idea is that "women have the option to wear flat formal shoes at work."

My Yes/No question is:
Is it legal to force women to wear high heels at work ?

My answer is:
No, absolutely not.

Most of the women and girls love to look gorgeous and attractive, so they might do lots of things; such as, do make up, wear the fashionable clothes ,or put on many nice accessories. "High heel" is one of the essential elements that can make women look beautiful, at least that what the ones who wear it think. Personally, I sometimes wear high heels, which is just 1.5", when I go to work.

I think high heels can make us feel taller and confident. And it also perfectly okay to wear high heels when you go to work, party, or some formal meetings.

However, I totally disagree about the idea mentioned above forcing women to wear high heels at the workplaces. The one who create this is really ill and his idea is terribly sexism and illogical. Since everyone has her rights to wear anything that is appropriate for her work.

Lawrence Davis, director at Equal Justice Limited solicitors, once said "If they set the code because they thought high heels made women look sexy, that is a case, because being sexy at work is not a job requirement," I couldn't agree more with her. This code also wonder me about the reason for they've tried so hard to push women to wear high heels is that it's properly dress for work or they just look down on women belonging to the lower position and fulfill their disgusting desire.

Thankfully, I was born in Thailand where, right now, women can dress whatever they want as long as it's appropriate.

  1. I totally agree that women should have their own rights to choose whether they want to wear high heels or not. Even though high heels make women look taller, slimmer, sexier and more attractive, they really hurt, especially when wearing them for a couple of hour.

When I went to work, I usually wore flat shoes because they were more comfortable and easier to walk. Most of my colleagues also wore flat shoes but some who were in the older generation often wore high heels. I think it might be because they were quite conservative.

  4. No, it is not. It is so insane of who need to force women wear high heel all time at work. In contrast, some careers that need to wear formal uniform or look smart when interact with customer, it can be a condition for some women who accept it. If it is a rule of company that some women know well before deal with the company, it is their duty to do follow the rule because they are compared to the face of company. I think.

  5. My answer is no. I think high heel is one of fashions that really harm to your back, legs and feet. It should be an optional choice for the employees whether they want to wear it or not. Especially the job that require them to stand and work for a long period, high heel should be the last choice.

  6. I think it's not necessary to make it legal. In addition, it's will make many problems when women wearing high heels work in factory of out-door work.

In terms of decency, For me, at work, CEO may enables wearing flip-flops illegal. However, wearing sandals or sneakers is OK in some work places such as in factories as it's convenient for people to work in that places.

  7. I would say no. Women should wear proper shoes at work, but proper shoes do not mean high heels. For some people who are not get used to wear high heels, it's hard for them to stay balanced on this type of shoes and it might lead to an accident. So, the company shouldn't force women to wear ones.

  8. I agree with you. I think choosing to wear high heels should be optional, especially to the workplace. I always wear high heels, four-inch ones, when I go to evening party in order to be taller and look better. But in daily life, I never wear them. I just can't stand having my calves hurt every single day.

  9. I agree with you that women should have right to wear anything they want. I think that work productivity don't come from high heel.

Just because people wear high heel, it doesn't mean that they can do work very well.

That's why, I think that firm should give the right for women to choose anything they want to wear as long as they it's not effect with their job.

    1. If I were a woman who is forced to wear high heels at work, I would think like you.

But, your comment here reminds me of the uniform and hairstyle of Thai students. Should they be forced to do in the school or university? Do you think the rules about such things are related to students’ performance, education, and development?

      That is worth thinking.

  10. I don't think it is legal to force women to wear high heels at work because every woman have rights to choose what they want to wear or what they don't want to wear. But I think individual has to think carefully by herself about what is appropriate to wear at work, not just wear something that she wants or likes.
