According to Elizabeth Garone writing in "What not to wear to a big job interview" (2016), Since first impression is everything, appearances, handshakes, and communication skill are the factors that make interviewers remember the candidates. Indeed, the outfit are also really important to make the positive impression. To do so, you have to do research about that company;what do people wear in general?, think about the image you want to show up, and always be overdressed. Although some employees, even Facebook's CEO "Mark Zuckerberg", go up with jeans and t-shirts, pertinent outfit is highly recommended. Because the ones who dress formally to the job interview absolutely won't be discouraged.

My Yes/No question is:
Should you be overdressed to the job interview?
My answer is:
Yes. It shows our respect
Some people might think they need clothes just because they can't go out and walk around without wearing anything, then, they don't really care what are on them. Well, that's wrong. Outfit depicts who we are; it shows our style, position, or even personalities, hence we should ponder more about what to wear. Especially, in the important ceremony, on date, and job interview.
In the interview, including collage, exchange, and career, first impression is everything. The interviewers will certainly judge you from your appearances, gesture, communication skills, and, of course, outfits. So, to impress the interviewers, you shouldn't ignore that details, although you may say that you're smart and talented enough to hit on the seat. Since being smart is not enough, everyone can be smart. The most considerate and prepared will win the position.
Dress the same way people occasionally dress there is good, but being overdressed is much better. Because you'll totally considered as respectful, prepared ,and impressive which result opposite outcome from the more casual. You should avoid casual attire, for example, jeans, t-shirts, and flipflop, since there's always a chance for wrong judgments and errors, especially in Thailand and most of Asian countries nearby where appearances are matters.
Don't let your dress ruin your opportunities! Be overdressed!

Although it depends on the job, I don't agree very much with Fang's main idea. But I also think that there are two very different questions here:
ReplyDeleteFirst, what do the facts say?
Second, should those facts be the facts?
I'd rather wait to see what others think before supporting my idea. When I gave my solid reasons showing that laws banning smoking in restaurants are morally wrong, everyone seemed to agree with my thesis that the government may not justly make such immoral laws against citizens, so this time I'll refrain from giving my support, at least for now.
Yes, I agree that one of the way to show the respect is an appropriate dressing such as appropriate dressing with the job, going to an event like conference, wedding or funeral with appropriate clothes. However, the most important thing is that you are confident and comfortable with the clothes you put on. If the overdressed is decreasing your confidence you shouldn't wear in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteYour blog post allows me to recall my father's speech. He told me that after having graduated from the university, he had found a job immediately. At first time, the CP company wanted to interview him for a job and definitely, he overdressed: a white long-sleeve shirt covered by a suit, black slacks, a tie and black leather shoes. Finally, he could be an accountant in the CP company. But, he changed companies four times and then in the forth interview, he merely wore a short-sleeve shirt with black slacks and black leather shoes. although he didn't overdress when compared with the first interview for a job, he could be admitted to do a job.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I don't agree with my father about this. I really agree with Fang about respect as well as sociability. For example, talking about going to a wedding ceremony, you had better not wear casual clothes like T-shirts, and flip-flops as many people in this ceremony will look at you suspect and don't want to communicate with you. That sounds terrible.
I think you should take the job you are going to an interview into account. If the jobs you are interested are ones like entertainer or clown, you might not want to get overdressed. Though, personally, I don't have any direct experiences on this, I still think the most appropriate dress to wear to an interview depends on the jobs you are interviewing for.

ReplyDeleteYes, I think so. I mean the white collar job judge the people on that basis of thought. You need to be overdressed, super-polite and very disciplined.
ReplyDeleteIt's like some kind of show. You know it's the game to win the impression. The best way to do so is make your appearance as the same standard of what they expect. The middle class in Thailand and developing country is not hard to guess what they want. If you want that job, just stick to those rules.
I think it depends on what jobs you are applying. If you apply for a higher position or the job that have to deal with clients, it is good to overdress on an interview. However, it is not necessary if you work in fields that use a lot of creativity such as architect or artist.
ReplyDeleteThis article remind me of some companies in Thailand which have a rule that women have to wear skirt to the office. I really hate this rule because I think wearing trousers is as polite as skirt. So, women should have their right to choose whether she want to wear skirt or not.
