Reduce accidents in Songkran Festival

According from Thailand last New Year holiday report about accidents, 3,810 injured in 3,549 road accidents. Police estimated 28% of the accidents were caused by drunk drivers. So during Songkran Festival in this year (13-15 Apr 09), The Public Health Ministry wanted to reduce the number of accidents, they issued 2 ideas which are ban alcohol sale. First, they will ban all alcohol during the songkran period. Second, they ban sale at stores but allow restaurants, pubs and hotels with an Department permit to serve booze from 6 p.m. to midnight. What do you think about this? I disagree with 2 of issued because they ban only that period, some people can plan or prepare themselves before. The government should control the impact of drinking rather than ban all or some alcohol places. They should more support Drink Don’t Drive Project and make a new campaign to stop giving alcohol for the gift in every festival instead.

  1. I agree with you to give gift an alcohol instread, but in real thing the goverment should find out a new solution to solve this problem. So it's up to each other common sense to stop drinking alcohol or gift giving.

  2. I agree with you. Anyways, are the police effective during the Songkran? I’m curious about that. I just imagine they also enjoy Songkran and become a little bit more acceptable for the criminals.
