Vegetarians 'get fewer cancers'

BBC NEWS reported "A vegetarian diet may help to protect against cancer."UK study Research analyse from 52,700 men and women who did not eat meat had fewer cancers than those who did. But, researchers found a higher rate of colorectal cancer among vegetarians. Although, this research gave a benefits for people. Many researchers had confusion in this case because "it doesn't support the idea that vegetarians would have lower rates of colorectal cancer and it means we need to think more carefully about how meat fits into it."
*What do you think about vegetarians may help to reduce cancers? and Would you tell a way to protect yourself from cancers?
*I think Peter will have more informations about vegetarians and we should ask him.
Thank you :)

  2. In my view, at first I agree that vegetarian diet help to reduce cancer because vegetable high in fiber and help digest system. Almost of it is antioxidant and inhibit cancer. When I read this news I am very surprise that the researchers found rate of colorectal cancer high in this group too. It makes me think that the middle line is good way to do everything because too tight or too loose is not good both. I protect myself from cancer by pay attention to eating and eat some supplementary product.

  6. Actually, Peter is more interested in how this fits in with Stephen Law's idea in "Carving the Roast Beast".
Law discusses health in his dialogue arguing that eating meat is immoral. On the whole, how do you think Ann's well chosen article from BBC News fits into Law's argument?

Another point of interest is one that Stuart made in his lecture this morning: that studies involving people are often very difficult to do and need to be repeated with more research; as BBC News reminds us, paraphrasing Professor Tim Key, "such studies are incredibly hard to do" (¶ 15).

  7. I disagree with eating only vegetables and eating only meat. I do nothing special to prevent from cancer. But I have tried to cook well-balanced menu. In Japan, we are expected to have eating habits which we should eat thirty items per day. It's said that it's a tip to keep healthty. As a result, life expectancy in Japan is higher than it in other countries. Actually, it is hard to carry out, I recommend you to do it!

  8. I've just seen a related article on the BBC: "Chinese food fights breast cancer", which might also relate to Michiyo's comment about the Japanese diet.
The writer reports that studies consistently show that Chinese have lower than usual breast cancer rates, and that more recent research suggests that two elements of the Chinese diet might help: mushrooms and green tea.

It's an interesting article, at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7947620.stm

  9. I agree that eating vegetable is good for health but we should eat it in various kind. Some kind of vegetables have chemical substance that has negative effect on our health. If we eat it a lot, it may be cause cancer,I think. Thus, balanced diet is a best way to be healthy.
