68 hot dogs in 10 minutes

Although, hot dogs is not my favorite food but every time I see this kind of wild eating competition on TV programme called “TV Champion” it always want to know How they can eat that much amount of food in such a short time? and i haven’t got any answers until today. I found the article "Is competitive eating the world’s weirdest sport?" on BBC news
The Participants who attend the eating contest for the first time are surprised by one thing that they are not fat. Takeru Kobayshi is one of them who eating inordinate amounts of hot dogs but still on the slender side. He held the world record for hot dogs eaten for nearly six years in the competition from his first appearance until 2007, when current record holder Joey Chestnut claimed the first of four consecutive victories with 68 hot dogs. ("Takeru Kobayashi", 2010, ¶ 1)
Before the competition begin, Chestnut will do practice eats. Besides, he will consuming only milk, water and liquid amino acid three days before the big contest just to make sure that his stomach is empty. There are some tricks on how to consume that much amounts of hot dogs by dunking it in water makes them softer and easier to eat, and to make food settle better in stomach by drinking hot water throughout while eating hot dogs. Even if it can causes some health problems but he is happy to do so.
I think this kind of competition is not strange for me because one’s who attend to any competition they have a passion and love to do whatever it is.

  2. Golf, I totally agree with you it's not weird because you can see this sort of competition everywhere even in your real life. I've ever competed with my friends like this when we go to a Japanese buffet restaurant. We use the number of dishes to decide who should be the winner.

I always feel amazing when I have seen the eating hot dogs competition. It seem they just throw their hot dogs into his mouth. It's not like eating because I don't see they chew their hot dogs anymore.

  3. But I think it strange, why people can turn anything to be a competition anytime? Because they aren't satisfied in themselves, yes?
I always want to change a channel when I saw this kind of program but my sisters are really love it, and I lose in a vote every time.

  4. I saw a sort of this alike competition a few years ago on TV. Besides, the shows want to know about how Kobayashi can swollow all that hotdog into his stomach. So they brought him to see a doctor for checking his intestine organs. They found that his stomach is much elastic and can enlarge much larger than normally people. That why he can consume such a thing more than us. I can't remember did the shows mentioned about his metabolism or not. But probably Kobayashi has high in metabolish too so he can still maintain his body in shape.

    Math,
I don't think people are competing because aren't satisfie in themselves but we are competing for name, reputation or acceptance from others. Anyway competition bring tension and stress which make me feel unpleasant.

  5. I agree with Math. When I read Golf's post the first time, I misread "wild" as weird, which is how those sorts of contests strike me (¶ 1). I don't think there's anything wrong with them, even if they are unhealthy, but they do seem a bit weird to me, although obviously they excite some people.
I can understand Wut's friendly competition (August 10, 2010 9:53 PM), which is something I might also do with friends, but I don't think that's quite the same as a full on competitive event where people actually train, study technique, and so on. Do they enjoy swallowing food that fast? Do they even taste the hot dogs or whatever it is they are swallowing as quickly as possible?
I like good food, and tend to eat a lot on some occasions, but I want to taste it and enjoy it.
Speed swallowing contests do seem a bit weird to me.
