There are many fantastic places on earth. Some are popular with their history like Big Ben in London and Statue of Liberty in New York, some are popular with their amazement like Pyramids in Egypt, Taj Mahal in India and The Great wall in china. How to choose those places to be a world heritage? In “What makes a place worthy of World Heritage status?” from BBC News contain a answer.
The Merton Priory, located in south of London, is one of the 38 British sites candidates to be a British candidate for world heritage 2010. This priory is behind a simply black door on underpass which many people walk past it every day. The sounds of trolleys in shopping mall and cars driving from above pass through to this site underground. The Merton Priory was used in 12th century by many of the kings of England such as Henry III and Henry IV, and was closed after abolition of monastery in Henry VIII age. It is not only as big and splendid as Westminster abbey included a huge church but also locate a statutes of Merton who basis an English Law. However, there are other candidates from around the world in the competition to be the World Heritage 2010.
Being the world heritage site has a difference definition from the past; it is about ancient building or historic monument, now it’s more about what people value as important. The chosen site will get support grants from many organizations. Moreover, the world heritage title will attract tourists and funds, and spread money to local area. Which site that you think going to be the World heritage?
In my opinion, the world heritage is a great title for tourism countries. In Thailand, we 5 sites for example Ban Chiang Archaeological Site and Historic City of Ayutthaya and Associated Historic Towns which popular with tourists. The world heritage site should have more, for helping local people and it is also the best managing way to preserve a condition of ancient or historic site by worldwide organization.

Nan,
ReplyDeleteWhy are "heritage status" gotten by vote? I think if it is a heritage, it is a heritage no matter what people value about it.
Like in Thailand, places like Phimai, and Pravihan are heritage by themselves not by a vote.
Math,
ReplyDeleteI think that they use voting process because it's international accepted process. The world heritage status was given by The World Heritage organization after an examination by the expert from many field like archaeolgy, humanities, anthroplogy or even scientist to support its ancient and value. In thailand, we also have the Fine Arts Department which look after Thailand's heritage site.
Every place have their own value, But to win this competition the place have to relevant to humanities and valued for people around the word.
Nan,
ReplyDeleteYes, voting is an international accepted process, but using voting system the more populated country will surely have more "heritage", and that not fair.
This like when we vote for the seven wonder in any era, it result occurred as a forgone conclusion, some places are really wonder, but many places "wonder" because they are in large country.
yeah. Actually Math is right. it was happen when Taj mahal was selected as a world heritage site. Then what makes the world heritage site? better say, how or who makes.
