It's time to stop global warming.

A lot of NGOs who concern about global warming have suggested a number of things to do to stop global warming. I have just agreed with them after I read "Huge ice sheet breaks from Greenland glacier" on BBC News online.

In Greenland, a 260 sq.km. ice sheet has just separated from the large Greenland glaciers. Although a researcher said the first six month of 2010 have been the hottest on record, he was not clear to say that was cause by global warming.

I think it would be a sign of ices at the earth pole are melting that was a result of global warming. The crack of ice may cause from the expansion when it get warm. When the crack can cover some area, it will split to a sheet of ice. After the sheet of was individual, it can floating to anywhere. If it going to the warmer area, it will melt and cause the higher level of the sea. Its size is very huge which is larger than Samui Island, with an area of 228.7 sq.km ("Ko Samui", 2010, ¶ 1). It will be a large amount of water when it melted. If this situation remain occur, the sea will flood our land. I think everyone don't want these to happen. Therefore, we should start to help our land by stop global warming.

  1. Hmm, this this interesting. But I think, at present, the global warming is nearly out of control, yet it's not but who knows when it become. The question for we now is not "Why the event like this continuing happen?" but "How we cooperating together as a global pacts," to seriously reduce some causes that make global warming as much as we can.

  2. I totally agree with Wut, so I attempt to do somethings which I can do particularly to help our planet better such as, don't use plastic bags, no more air condition during the day; however, we should persuade others to help our world, too, because we need a lot of cogs in order to run the watch. Therefore, if each person in the world do one thing to help our world, so our world going to be better.

  3. I agree that it's necessary to take action, but I'm not sure that things like using less plastic bags will work, although there might be other good reasons for doing that. I think the plastic bag thing is just a trendy way for shops to safe money and get some good PR at the same time.

A much more effective solution would be for shops to stop selling meat, the production of which creates enormous amounts of green house gases that are believed to be at least partly responsible for global warming. And of course, concerned citizens should eat less meat instead of using less plastic bags if they really want to help.

    Any other ideas?

  4. How eat less meat can help the world, and what does "green house gases" means ?

  5. After I read the meaning of green house gases from wikipedia, I completely understand what is Peter's point.

Thank you for the information which making global warming.

Who's want to know what green house gases is. Please, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenhouse_gas.

  6. Net,
Green house gases are the cardon dioxide and other gases that are believed by many to be driving global warming. Burning oil creates these gases and pumps carbon into the atmosphere, which is why some people think that should be controlled.

Producing meat requires an enormous amount of energy, most of which comes from burning oil, coal and so on, and it uses vast amounts of water and other resources, far more than the production of grains and vegetables. If people ate less meat, it would be far more effective than using a few less plastic bags.

  7. And since we're now on that topic: do most of us need to eat meat at all?

  8. Um.. it's difficult to answer this question. I think, everything which I have done on each everyday in my whole life had effects to our world, so I think I'll do my best which suit to my life style most.

  9. Thanks for your comments.

I agree with Peter that using less plastic bag is not a significant things to do, but I don't think meat production emits too much green house gas. You can see in chart on page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenhouse_gas#Anthropogenic_greenhouse_gases. Only 12.5 percent of green house gas come from agricultural byproduct that include both meats and vegetables. The major sources are power station, industrial processes and transportation fuels. I think saving electricity and using public transports instead of cars are the effective ways to slow the global warming effect.

  10. Wut,
Thanks for posting the link to your research. I'll reconsider my ideas. Perhaps I've had the wrong idea about the contribution that the agricultural sector makes.
What I want now is a bit more information about the figures in the pie-chart. Specifically, are the full amount of emissions for which each sector is responsible, or just the actual emissions? For example, the machines to plow soil to plant wheat emit green house gases, which I presume is counted, but is the energy needed to pump water also included in agriculture, or was it included in power stations? I suspect the latter just looking at the figures, but a more accurate analysis would tell us what amount of teh power station energy went to the agricultural sector, and what part of transport and so on also went to that sector.

I like your research, which is the sort of solid evidence that we like, and I'm reconsidering my beliefs.
