Contact lenses are very popular in Thailand right now and alot of teenagers are wearing them because they think it will make them look more attractive. But the below recent news article from the BBC is a warning that all Thai teenagers should be aware of.
The article states that US opticians are concerned that teenagers could be putting their eyesight at risk by using contact lenses styled on a Lady Gaga video. The lenses can bought online from overseas websites but.are illegal in the US as they haven't been approved by federal health officials.

US Doctors declare that contact lenses should only be purchased after an optician has approved a prescription and that the non-approved lenses could lead to problems like eye infections, damage to vision, and even loss of vision. One Asian distibution company, which sells the lenses online, believes the product is safe and has been approved by officials in Asia. However, I wonder if this company's claim is correct?

I'm a bit sceptical of the warning.
ReplyDeleteThat the lenses are not FDA approved does not mean they are dangerous, and if people have already been using them for a long time without any problems, that suggests that they are not dangerous. Perhaps the best solution is for the FDA to approve them or show that they really aren't safe.
I think the US opticians just don't want people to spend their money somewhere else. Is there any actual evidence that they are more dangerous than any other sort of contact lens? Millions of people wear contact lenses for various reasons, and I think most never have any problems. I used to wear them but didn't like them; I never had any problems with them, I just didn't like the feel of them on my eye balls.
How lucky I am because my sister don't interest in this stuff. If you have seen, the contact lens that Lady Gaga wears are not for fixing eye problem. Because they are used as a fashion, and they are as large as goose egg. I suggest you watch Lady Gaga's music video Bad romance. See for yourself at 1:18.

This contact lens are called "Big Eye". They came from Korea and very popular in Thailand for a while. Many girls wear these contact lens because thay think it make them looks cute. But they don't concerns about what the danger using these contact lens such as bacterial infection and a damage to their eyes.
In my opinion, if a persons doesn't have any sightline problems and they continue to wears "Big Eye" contract lenses they might risking their eyes.
