B. Your opinions on alcohol

To help us get ideas, Hartmann's Step C. exercise on page 226 asks us to first brainstorm our ideas in short notes and then share them in a group (2007).

Hartmann's brainstorming prompt B. is:
  • Do you believe that alcohol should be advertised in magazines or on TV?  Why or why not?
Before you read your classmates' ideas, I suggest you response write in sentences in a comment for five minutes. Then quickly read what your classmates have written, looking especially for ideas you disagree with, but also replying to expand ideas you agree with.

  1. Yes, alcohol, and other drugs, should be advertised on TV. It is true that alcohol is a nasty drug of addiction, but that does not mean people don't have a right to decide to use it, and if it's legal, the producers should be able to advertise it. And those who hate alcohol must also be free to advertise against its use.

I'm not sure whether governments should be paying for advertising for either position.

Of course, alcohol kills, but then, so do cars. Must Mercedes Benz be banned from advertising their product because some users drive recklessly, often after using alcohol, and kill innocent people on the streets? Must Mercedes Benz be banned because some drivers are reckless and harm others? Or because their product pollutes the air I have to breathe?

  2. Alcohol should not be advertise in magazine, TV and whatever because it is an increase in exposure of alcohol information for everyone, especially children and teenager. Many teenagers in these day always have alcohol in their party or meeting, that is too much. Moreover, there are a lot of news about alcoholics create some problem almost everyday such as car crash, shooting, even rape. Although it is not totally alcohol fault, it cannot be refuse that alcohol is relevant. Because, alcohol can decrease consciousness of people.
Now, I can think only one reason of why does alcohol still legalize that is alcohol has some benefit to our health if we drink it properly.

    1. I disagree that alcohol has any benefit for health that justifies different treatment to other drugs, such as yaa baa. It is true that there is a small correlation between drinking a small quantity of red wine daily and a reduction in risk of heart disease, but the reduction is small, and the amount of alcohol is much less than almost all drinkers actually drink. In fact, alcohol as normally consumed is more dangerous to the drinker than all illegal drugs except heroin. cocaine and methamphetamine, but only slightly worse - alcohol is a deadly drug for users and for society.
Is harm to the user a good enough reason to stop adults doing something? If you think that harming to the user is a good reason to ban, then ice-cream is harmful to its users, as is fatty pork leg.

  3. I think alcohol should not be advertised to anywhere. Because it might make children who are under 18 years want to try it. Moreover, the government should let the campaign for stop drinking or show the disadvantages of drinking alcohol on TV and magazines instead. It would save children for experiment it at the first time.
