Smoking and mental illness cut men's life short.

My friend had once complaint, "Women live longer than men because they didn't do anything!" I thought that he was being exaggerated, but now I've realized it's somewhat right.

According to BBC News' article "Gender gap: Will men ever live as long as women?" (2015), research has confirmed that, though the biological cause of women's longevity is still unknown, currently, a gap between men's and women's life expectancies in UK is narrowing due to continuously increasing in awareness of smoking's danger and lesser employment in dangerous jobs.

I unconsciously nodded my head. Women live longer than men because they did not smoke! Though I'm not sure why most women do not smoke, my friend said that she hate it because it's stink, it's bad for everyone's health, and the smell always stick to her cloth. However, I personally like the burning smell of cigarette even though I'm not a smoker. Does this mean that men might get attracted to the smell more that women? If so, this can be the reason why men smoke more than women. I wish that scientists could confirm this.

Also, I think that mental health might affect life expectancy too. It's widely known that the mental illness, especially the chronic one, will make you physically ill. The longer the mental disorder is, the severer it affects. For example, people with depression or chronic stress will have low appetite and will develop a sleep difficulty which might persist through their lives. In my last post, I've also learnt that men is more prone to mental illness than women, which in turn leads to a suicide in some cases. This really does have an effect on the statistics of men's life expectancy.

Overall, I think we are going to live longer. But are men going to outlive women in the near future? I don't think so.

  1. I agree with you that women is likely to outlive men in the future.
One reason is that men would suffer from mental problem than women,as you said. Because, I personally think that men is taught to be brave and do not show their weakness to the others. As everyone knew, telling our problem to family and friends can release some stress, therefore, men may keep their stress and problem with themselves because they is family's pillar and they have to be strong.

  3. as i begin to read this article, i think of your previous post about men's suicide and at the end i found that this is written by the same person.

Why r u so obsessed with death huh? lol

besides that, i also think that because of men's nature that like to involve with adventurous activities more than women make them die early.

  4. I like your assumption about different smell preference between 2 genders.

By the way, I agree with your answer about the last question. From my experience, I feel that men always have more stress and dangerous factor, like smoking, alcohol drinks, carelessness, than women making them have shorter life.

  5. I aree with you and I think two more reasons that make women live longer than men is men work harder than women in early life so their physical body are destroyed more than women and another one, female always take care her self better than men.

  6. I strongly agree with you. I have some friends that are addicted to smoking. They told me that when they smoked, they felt relax and released the stress and worried. However, I've never smoked before because I don't like it smell.

  7. I don't like the burning smell of cigarettes, and I do smoke occasionally - about once a week, when I'm out with friends. I greatly dislike the smell of old cigarette smoke, so I never let people smoke in my home. I send them out onto the balcony if they need a cigarette.

But I do like the smell of a good cigar. Most days as I'm walking to AUA, I pass a man having his morning coffee with a cigar just in front of the Montien Hotel, whose grounds I take a short cut through. I guess he works in the area, maybe he's the owner of the cafe, where he always sits in the same chair, calmly watching the scene in front of him. The rich, distinctive smell seems to reflect the relaxed, slow habit of smoking a cigar, which contrasts strongly with Silom Road around 9:00 in the morning! I would miss him if he stopped his morning routine, but I wouldn't let him smoke in my home, either.

  8. In my opinion, women is conscious of one's appearance more than men, that make many of women don't smoke.

    1. May's idea sounds like something that might be useful in a few weeks.
In the meantime, I think it was because she was conscious of the image, sexy, rebellious and sophisticated, that my mum used to smoke in the 1950s. She says she stopped because after my birth, I used to eat her cigarettes.

    2. I agree with both of you. For example, most females have more concerned about their weigh than male. This example looks like this article that most females concern more health than males so the women smoke less.

However, life expectency not depends on only sex but it also depends on other factors such as individual behavior, environment. For instance, I hate smoker and feel bad when is near a person who smokes because I hardly breath in and out regularly. This example showed me that I get a risk from smoker. Another example is most female teenagers in this generation dare to do something more so the female teenagers are prone to smoke more than the past.

  9. According to smoking, I agree with you that women do not like bad smell and effect from cigarette. However, I have another idea that is attitude. Most people think that women who smoke are bad one, so women who care society's perspective will not smoke. Constantly, there have been a strange perspective which is men who smoke are attractive, of cause, I do not why somebody think like that, so this reason encourage men to smoke.
