Human behavior’s always astonishing and attractive because human responses for things or actions are numerously varied due to their entire life experience, that they have acquired, as well as different environment factors influencing them such as social norm and culture. Although considering stated factors, human’s reactions for stimuli are difficult to anticipate correctly, there are still some common responses that we might share.
The article “How to win at rock-paper-scissors” provides information of study relating to playing rock-paper-scissors game of which the experiment at Zhejiang University in China had shown that most participants didn’t randomly play a game but followed the hidden strategy “win-stay lose-shift”, that means winners tended to repeat their actions whereas losers tended to change their action in the next round.
The strategy “win-stay lose-shift” may not be always correct but it gives an interesting idea how we can roughly predict an action of a player during a rock-paper-scissors game. If we determine the idea in the broader concept, prediction of human behavior will provide magnificent outcomes. Take the stock exchange scenario as an example. It’s obviously that anticipating what people are going to do after some condition including external and internal factors occurred will benefit investors who understand the correct circumstance. The other outstanding examples are scenarios taking place in a casino. In the casino, the poker game is one of the classical human behavior analyses. In the poker game, the gambler has to bet based on cues that other gamblers provide in the game such as their faces, their words or their playing styles. This scenario clearly illustrates that if you can understand or can predict the people behavior for playing the poker game, you will probably get high chances to win the game. The other minor example in casino happens between dealers and gamblers. In this scenario, dealers investigate and infer behavior of each gambler and then approach strategies for tackling each gambler in order that the casino can maximize their advantages. Another example more closely relates to our student life. Generally, if our instructor gives us questions or tests, we should prepare ourselves before the time of questions or tests has come. The question rises how we can prepare ourselves for questions or tests. Surely, predicting our teacher style is always the best solution to get high mark in your score.
In my experience, I predict what instructors expected from me many times as frequently as possible because I believe that if we don’t consider what questioners ask I cannot give them the exact answer that will satisfy them, especially for fussy persons. However, from my entire experience I cannot accurately predict what they want all the time due to many reasons, that sometimes I cannot explain, and many times I also guess the wrong things. Hope that people will be less complicated than they are.

Yes, as Ball notes in his last paragraph, there are some "fussy persons" who want "the exact answer that will satisfy them."
ReplyDeleteAnd I had also seen that article a few days ago. I'm glad to see that someone else found it interesting and has blogged it for all of us.
DeleteI like your article. It's interesting.
ReplyDeleteIt's reasonably safer to predict others' expectations on you and plan your response than to be unprepared. I have to try predicting more often.
Ball told me about his article in the morning, and that sounds very interesting because I really want to know how to apply this experiment to poker games.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading his article, I think it's quite difficult to apply the strategy to Poker because there are a lot of factors which are different such as the pressure when you bet more money or dealer's behavior who has never fold his cards (It's not his money it's casino's money).
However, it's a very good idea to learn “win-stay lose-shift” because I always lose my friends when we play rock-paper-scissors, and the loser has to drink a shot of vodka.
It seems unfair that the loser drinks a shot of vodka - the more you lose, the more drunk you come, so the less mental and physical ability you have, so the more likely you are to lose, ,,, and have to drink even more vodka.
