E-cigarette : Is it a good choice?

In my third blog post, I write about the risk of babies who was born to the smoking mother, and most of us comment that mothers must stop smoking for their newborns. Today, I have found a new choice for helping smokers to stop this bad habit, not only for smoking mothers, but also for everyone.

According to “ E-cigarettes ‘help smokers to quit’ ”, smokers who have willpower to stop smoking by themselves, or buy something, such as gum and patches, to replace nicotine, are less successful than someone who uses e-cigaretttes. However, they are not safe at all, they are just less harmful than smoking real cigarettes which contain tobacco.

After I read this news, I have a lot of questions because the writer doesn’t represent any strong supporting reasons that why this invention is more effective than other choice, so I search for more information about it. What I have found from “The e-cigarettes phenomenon” is that it can separate into two parts, the first part contains a liquid nicotine, and the second part is a rechargeable battery and an atomiser.

You might think that why they are better than real cigarettes, both of them also have nicotine. There are many reasons that why e-cigarette is better. The first reason is that e-cigarettes don’t contain tobacco – the dried leaves that are used to make cigarette – which is very harmful for health. Second, something that look like smoke from e-cigarettes is just water vapour which has no smell that annoy other people. And the last reason is that they don't have some of toxic chemicals that smoke from real cigarettes have. I think smoker seems to be an addict, so it isn’t easy to quit immediately. It will come up with the side effects. For example, they will be anxious, or some of them will have an aggressive behavior. Consequently, using e-cigarettes can make them think that they are smoking real cigarettes like they usually do because not only their tastes, but also their designs are similar.

Although using e-cigarettes is a new alternative for smokers who want to quit and it sounds like a good choice, so they are used by many smokers in UK. However, there are no evidence about the long-term effect. They might be good at first, but no one guarantee that they aren’t dangerous for health in the future. If I am the smoker, I think I won’t try this until I am sure that they aren’t the cause of any diseases. Imagine that you, or someone who is close to you are smokers, Will you use this? Will you suggest another to use this?

  1. As I know, e-cigarette has been popular in schools and universities in the US for a couple of years. Children have used it just for fun, like a toy. They have not thought that it contains nicotine and may affect their health.

    1. If it's known that the e-cigarette has harmful effects, but that those effects are less harmful than regular cigarettes, would it be rational, would it be justified, to ban the e-cigarette and not also ban the regular cigarette?

Alcohol is much more harmful than both cigarettes and e-cigarettes, so if we do not want to ban alcohol for a reason that is not prejudice, which cannot justify a ban, then we need a good reason. Is there one? I can't think of any reason that would justify allowing alcohol to be legal while less harmful drugs such as marijuana and yaa baa are illegal. Can you think of a good reason for the way most societies discriminate between alcohol and other drugs of addiction? Or is this another example of prejudice that causes immoral behaviour, customs, values and beliefs?

    1. I dislike the smell, so I ban smoking in my home.
But I don't think my personal preferences are a good enough reason to control how other people use their private property: smoking should not be banned by law in restaurants and other private property, only on public property, such as footpaths and parks.

  5. Everyone knows that smoking and cigarette harms you and everyone around you. E-cigarette might not harm other people ,but it may contain harmful byproducts. If e-cigarette don’t contain tobacco and don't harm smoker, teenager might smoke it for fun.
