Effects of Love Locks

In this day and age, I believe everyone must have seen a picture of numerous locks on a bridge. Love locks just became popular in this decade. They have spread out rapidly. Couples use them to stand for their loves which intend to last forever like locks that lose their keys.

According to “Are love locks on bridges romantic or a menace?,” the love locks are claimed that they destroy both bridges’ appearance and structure.

I firstly knew of the idea of the love locks when I watched a Korean series about five years ago. I thought that it was creative and romantic. I even thought that if I had a boyfriend I would like to visit the place and lock the locks together. It seems to be enjoyable and memorable. I have to admit that I have not thought about their consequences until I read the article.

It is reasonable that countless heavy locks can take down a panel of a bridge. And when the bridge was not only another ordinary bridge, but a heritage that has architectural and historical values, this became a serious problem. I am not surprise to know that locals were upset when they saw their cherish bridge were harmed by a thoughtless tradition and their beautiful views were covered by these obstacles.

On the other hand, a city can take benefit from the practice by assigning a particular place for this and making it a tourist activity. From my viewpoint, as a business person, I think the love locks activity leads to a large amount of income. Making this kind of tourist attraction, the place requires very little money in no time. It does not need a fine art, only plain panels can do. The panels should be separated from the bridge structure and should be able to taken off. Not only the cost of this place is low, but also the income is high. It will support transportation business and shops around there. There will also be new shops which sell the locks. The locks are very good kind of products for sellers because they are not repeated used. The shops can sell one lock to one traveler, and that can be a huge amount each day.  In addition, the locks are not rotten. The shops did not have to worry about their expiry date. It is not much risky storing the goods. For these reasons, this is an extremely tempting business. There is only profit, profit and profit. I would recommend that the locks sold in each area should have a theme. For example, locks sold for a bridge are all in gold color and for another bridge are all in colorful, so that when they are on the bridges they will be beautiful backgrounds for photo shooting.

In conclusion, the love locks are hateful when they are on historical places, but they can be pleasurable when they are in a suitable place.

  1. Pueng, who should be responsible for the panels: private businesses, or a government body? And if a government, how will they pay for it?

Now that I think of it, should bridges be provided by governments? Or should communities provide bridges? Or businesses?

    1. I think people who are responsible for the panels and the bridges should be ones who own or rent the land. The ones can be any organization of what you suggested: business units, communities or governments. The investment can be paid back by rent out shop spaces in the area. If governments provide and manage the place, they could spend a part of tourism fund for this.

  2. I also have not thought about the consequences until I read your post. I think Love Locks cannot prove how long my relationship going to last. If two people love and care for each other, they will have a long and happy relationship.

  3. In my opinion, Promise is just a promise, to lock the lock together seems to be romantic but the real romantic the most is the last long relationship. So locking the locks is not matter. But if the lovers really want to lock, why don't they find a new place which is not a bridge? The best place they should lock together is their hearts for each other :-)

  4. I have seen Love Locks in some scene of many Korean series and I also didn't think about the bridge's structure until I read your blog. Love Locks seems to be a romantic activity for couple in love and also be an interesting place for travelers who come to Korea to find some place appeared in their favourite series.

It is true that Love Locks can't assure everyone who locks it with their couple will have long love until the end of their life and I think women know that but some of them just want her boyfriend to do something romantic. However, I don't have a feeling to do it because I concern now that there are too many locks on the bridge.

  5. Now I think that this isn’t only one problem. Take coin in the well as an example, people think that put the coin into the well and they can come back to this place again. However, have you ever thought that this action causes the pollution in the water and also harm fish if they eat the coin? I believe there are also many situations that we have done without considering the outcome as Love Locks and coin in the well.

  6. Actually, I do love Love Locks because the meaning of it is quite romantic. To be honest, I have never thought about this problem before because I think the place of this kind of locks can be a famous place that a lot of travelers really love to visit. For example, Namsan Tower in Korea - the place that people do Love Locks, is a place to visit for a tourism. Therefore, I think it depends on what you think of it. It might destroy something, but also establish a famous one at the same time.

  7. I think travellers just collect photos for memorable events in anywhere is better than to leave the love memorial like this.
