Baby or Cigarettes ?

Nowadays, many women get marriage very late, maybe over 35, and as we already know that pregnancy at the ages over 35 is harmful for their children. If those women are smoking, what will happen with their baby?

According to “Over-35 pregnant smokers risk baby heart defects”, if the pregnant women who are over 35 smoke, their infants will have a risk of having heart problem.

As someone knows that smoke from cigarettes contains many chemical things. So smoking cigarettes is harmful for people’s health and it is also dangerous for baby who was born to smoking mother, especially who are older than 35 years old. An innate heart defects is a big serious problem that might occur if those pregnant smokers still do not care about their children’s health. Moreover, to smoke during pregnancy raise a risk of many problems such as abortion, premature birth and too small babies.

I am sure that almost everyone know how cigarettes affect their health, maybe not much knowledge about it but they might know that it is not good for themselves. However, someone still smoke and I don’t blame them because I think smoking cigarettes seems like an addict. If you are addicted by something, it is hard to stop. And I think people who smoke are not strange or look bad as someone think but I also try to avoid smelling clouds of smoke which I believe that it is not good for me. However, the pregnant women should concern seriously about this behavior. Their babies are the most important thing that they have to worry about. Why they don’t use this chance to change and give up not only for newborns, but also for themselves.

  1. I think being mom at age over 35 is very risky, my mom had me when she was 34 but luckily I was a strong baby. But the point is I got sick easily because of my immune system is not good and there's many problems both for me and my mom. So, No matter you're smoker or not. it's a challenge for pregnant at that age. I think not only smoker mother that should stop smoking while they're pregnant, but also theirs smoker in their family because being passive smoker is much more dangerous than the smoker.

    1. I think women who want to be a mother should prepare themselves for having baby, so they should stop smoking before trying to have children, not only when they are pregnancy. And I agree with you that smoker should try to stop smoking for their families, the most important thing in their life.

    1. I don't like the smell, either, which is why I ban smoking from my home - if my guests need a cigarette, they have to step outside.

But I'm not sure that governments should ban it in restaurants and other places that are private property.

I ban it in my home because it's my right to make those decisions. And I think restaurant owners should have the same right to determine such regulations for their property.

    2. I'm not sure that there are no benefits. If there really are no benefits, why do so very many people smoke?

    3. Maybe because smoking is related to the activity they are up to, like some people are used to smoke while they are thinking, so they smokes whenever they are thinking. Just like a habit, some kind like that, I think.

    4. In my opinion, non smoking person, cigarette may make the smokers relax or get rid of their stress.

As an observer from my friends, artists and designers, 60-70% are smokers. They are more enjoyable when smoking in drinking party. This may be another reason.

    5. It's very hard to find some benefits of smoking cigarettes, maybe Pop and Nan are right. I think smokers just want to relax themselves or try to think about something.

But for health, I think smoking doesn't have any benefits.

  3. I think when women get pregnant, they must be concerned about their health. Most of them usually stop doing what makes their health get worse. If they really love their babies and totally want them to be healthy, they must stop smoking because it causes many diseases. In my opinion, being mom is not that hard, but being a good mom is much harder.

  4. I don't like the cigarette smell too, although I'm the one who sometimes smoke especially when I hang out with my friends.
I agree that smoking is very harmful and it's a waste of money, but one thing I got from smoking is friends. I got a lot of friends from smoking society during the class-break, when I was studying at the university. However, it's not worthy to start smoking just only to make friend.

    1. If smoking gives you pleasure when socializing, is it really "a waste of money"?

I enjoy French food, which is sometimes a little expensive, but I don't think that spending a bit on a great meal with friends or family is a waste of money.

Am I wrong? Is paying a lot for a great meal actually a waste of money?

  5. When I'm reading this, I thought about something relating to this article but it's different. What I thought is all women should have a child before they're 35. Because the risk of having baby with Down syndrome and other defects is greatly increase if the mother's age over 35. For example, at age 25, the risk is 1 in 1,250. But at age 35, the risk becomes 1 in 400, 3 times more.

    1. When I read Petch's comment, I also thought of something different but related. I thought that there is an injustice with Thai law on abortions, which should be legal for all women who want them. For example, women whose medical tests show a problem such as Down's syndrome should be able to have an abortion if they choose to.

  6. I've been seeing a lot of women smoking lately. Smoking is harmful not only to the smokers but also people around them. When my mother was pregnant with my brother, my father quit smoking. I am so proud of my father that he quit smoking for our family.

  7. I have many friend who smoke a cigarette. I asked them why they smoked, they said that smoking is help to decrease stress, decrease craving for foods but I never see the benefits of smoking cigarette. Moreover, some people who smoke a cigarette always have bad smell of mouth then I don't want to talk with him anymore.

  8. Your blog post reminded me thinking of my friend who were pregnent.
During her pregnancy, she had to refrain herself from a lot of fevorite activities like nail painting, hair dried, medicine taking(when she got sick). She also concerned her baby's health as much as other moms. I believed that moms in future know smoking can effect on them and babies. However, if they stop smoking before being pregnant, it still has risk to babies or not. I guess it can lead to got a weak immune system.
