A modern issue: meals to kill for - group 2

A modern issue that is important to some people is whether or not we human beings should be eating meat. Some people think that we should be vegetarian, and not kill other animals to feed ourselves. Others think that there is nothing wrong in enjoying meat from animals we have killed for that purpose.

That this modern issue is controversial can be seen, for example, within Buddhism: some groups of Buddhists believe that meat should not normally, or ever, be eaten, whilst others disagree, saying that eating meat is normally acceptable.

At least one side on this controversy must be wrong. And since their views appear to be not merely contrary but contradictory, at least one side must also be right.

  • What do you think? Who is right and who is wrong?
  • Is it morally acceptable to eat meat? And since there is a real controversy here, you will need some supporting reasons for your answer, so why or why not?

  1. I deem eating meat, such as pork, chicken, beef and so forth as customary deed. Thai people have long believed that eating meat is not prohibited so we eat it every meal. In legal field and philosophy, we protect animal lives only because it has a very close relationship to human. So we only protect some dogs or kittens that we all raise for pleasure, certainly not every animal. Therefore, I see no point not to eat meat.

  2. I believe there is no right or wrong answer to the question whether to kill animals for food. I personally think it is a matter of personal belief which is associated with his/her religion. For me, I would like to give my view as from Christianity. As appeared in the Bible -- in the Book of Genesis which is the first book in the Bible -- the scripture talks about how God created all beings, including humans and other living things (or animals in this aspect). It says that all creations, except humans themselves, are meant to be at humans' disposition -- for consumption. This means that animals may be eaten by men. Therefore, my point I'm making here is the animals are there for us to consume, but it is up to us whether to choose to eat the animals/meats or not -- regardless of which kind of dietary behavior you have.

  3. I agree with the idea that killing the animal for living purpose is not be extremely wrong. I think animals can provide you with the significant nutrients which you may not find in some vegetables or beans that what the vegetarian always eat. Some research says that lack of some amino acids coming from the protein having in meat causes some serious illness. The good example may be the lack of nutrient in some countries like Saudi arabia or Nigeria. Children who do not receive the suitable nutrient may have a health problem such as an abnormal function of their organs. However, if you enjoy eating meat too much it can affect with your health in the opposite way. Therefore, you need to control the amount of meat that you eat. And if you can control that the amount of the overall killing the animal could reduce too.

  4. I think that the people who believe that eating meat is acceptable are right. The Buddhists know that our Buddha ate meat in the past. He did not state that we should not eat the meat. It's normally to eat meat for survive. Because the body of the human should get all nutrients for growth, repair; to name a few, we will need protein from meat which is the essential protein. Therefore, we have to eat sufficient meat in our dailylife although we can recieve protein from other sources such as soy and bean. I think those is not enough of protein that people need to use and transfer to energy. Somes who eat only vegetable will lack protein.

  5. It is hard to determine which is right or wrong. I think everybody have eaten meat since they was born. Therefore, they may think that eaten meat is not wrong. However, if you study about Buddhism, you will find that kill animals is the bad thing. The result of killing animals will effect your live as soon as possible, or may be after your died. Which is the taught of Buddhism. Someone believe this, but somebody don't believe it. For me, I think eat meat is not wrong because our body want to have energy which contained a lot in meat. If you kill animals for eat, I think it is not wrong. But if you kill for another reasons, you are not a good person, you will receive some effect of this action in the future. Anyway, if you can quite to eat meat, it is the best thing for you and another animal.

  6. For my opinion, it is not wrong to kill the animals for eating because human is a kind of animals that need to eat both meat and vegetable to get a good health. The nature makes human to gain the nutrient from both. Even though, the vegetarian said the nutrient from the animals can be replaced by the vegetable, but not exactly the same and it usually come from the synthesis that means not natural. Moreover, the different place to live for human is the other thing to concern because there are different factors in each country. For example, Thailand is easily to get the meat and the vegetable but some country in the western has very cold weather, so it is difficult to find them. In conclusion, we should eat all the nutrient that we need, not eat everything we want.

  7. Human need food for being and doing activities for their life. I think eating meat is normally acceptable. As we know that we have to kill some animal to make food, but some of them born to be human's food. If vegetarians think that eating meat means killing lives, they are wrong. They eat only vegetable but those vegetable are plants and they are lives as well. To make a comparison between source of meat and vegetable, both of them spend times to grow up. I can say that eating meat or vegetable is equal action. We should choose the best food for our lives.

  8. In my opinion, a group of people who think that there is nothing wrong in eating meat is right. This is because it is meat is one type of food that gives such a high energy and nutrient to people and our body requires those energy from the meats to perform tasks in daily life.

I also believe that it is morally acceptable to eat meats because we all need to understand that it is the cycle of food science that human eat animals, whilst animals eat other small animals or vegetables. If all people are vegetarians, the animals will be overwhelming in the world while the number of human is increasing everyday because lack of significant nutrients.

  9. I support the idea that we can kill animals for our food because we killed animals for a reason. Killing other lives (for food) is very common in animal world. For examples, snakes eat mouses and birds eat worms. As we know, we people are also in the Animal Kingdom. This means that killing other lives is not wrong. But it depends on our choices - kill or not kill. If you don't want to kill animals because of your reasons, then you can just eat vegetables and grasses for your lives.

  10. Personally, I think eating animal is morally acceptable because it is the rich source of protein. Economically, if we suppose that eating meat by killing animal was banned, it is definitely sure that millions of people will suffer from the lack of food. The writing cited that some Buddhists believe that eating animal is morally unacceptable. In fact, according to the Buddha words, he did not Buddhists from eating animal. Moreover, what the heart of Buddhism is the cause and effect, which demonstrate the belief of reasoning. So eating meat by not harshly hurt animals is reasonable and also acceptable. Importantly, if the energy getting from the meat we eat was used in the good way and better our world we living in, the life of animals that were kill are worthwhile.

  11. I support the idea that people should eat meat. Although this concept might be unbearable for some Buddhist, I still think that eating meat or being an omnivore is not a sin but an ordinary things in human's way of life. If we don't eat meat, we will lack of protein. That's the truth. Therefore, in order to get a healthy life, human should consume meat as much as they want. In conclusion, it's totally acceptable for me to eat meat as this kind of food contains the protein that's good for your health.

  12. I think it's can not judge this issue. I can not blame some people that consume meat because I'm the one that eat meat. But I doesn't mean I prefer turn to eat vegetarian. The benefits if you are vegetarian is you don't have to kill other animals for consume. That mean you always eat clean food.In my opinion I think meats are important for our human body because they give us a protein that necessary for health.

  13. I think eating meat is acceptable. First, I think it is necessary to keep the cycle of living to be continue. If some animals were born to be food for others, it is acceptable to eat them. People do not mean to hurt them but we eat them just to be alive. Secondly, I think animals using for food come from a certain process to treat them. So we do not hurt those.

  14. Although some Buddhists believe that killing meat for eating purpose, I think it is acceptable and it usually occurs in my daily life. Because people cannot live healthy without eating meats because meats contain nescessary amino acids that cannot be found in vegetables, this is why I support eating meat. I also think that it is morally acceptable to eat meat if you do not hurt anyone.

  15. I personally think that it's not wrong for human to eat meat. I think eating meat is acceptable and it's is common thing in human's life since meat is source of human energy. For example, human body gain protein from meat and some specific nutrients that could not gain from vegetable. Moreover, some people especially children need protein from meat for their growth.
