Art: Themes and Purposes. Quest 2, Unit 2, chapter 3. Term 3, 2014

For the rest of the term in Quest, we will be reading about and discussing art.
Painting Van Gogh by T. F. Chen, 1991
An obvious first question might be: What is art?

However, Hartmann limits her discussion to a much narrower set of art: the visual arts, starting with the image above on the opening page of chapter 3, and we too can probably ignore the difficult question of what art is, even if we do not limit ourselves here to the traditional visual forms of art that are the subject of chapter 3 of Quest (2007, p. 71 - 104).

Write down your responses to Hartmann's questions on page 73, as below:
  • Look at the picture. What images do you see in the painting? Are they realistic?
  • What do you like or dislike about this painting? Why?
  • What is your favourite work of art? Why do you like it? (p. 71) You need not limit yourself to visual art in responding to this question.

  1. In the painting, I see at least three portrait images. They are realistic because they are faces of people.

I like the painting because the woman face in the picture can be seen in two ways, facing the painter in the picture and facing audience like us.

My favorites work of art are young children's paintings because they are from a innocent mind and have a lot of imaginations.

  2. In this painting, I see a man painting a portrait of someone. Beside him, there is a finished portrait, and a woman, whose face resemble with Van Gogh drawing style, sits, and perhaps waits for him.

I like this picture because of the uses of colors. It is very colorful, and makes people feel happy and relax. Importantly, this picture doesn't express any depression, or hopelessness, which are things I hate in some paintings.

My favorite work of art are semi-realism paintings, especially one that make people feel hopeful, adventurous, and encouraging, because they always make me happy, and feel ready to face challenges in life whenever I look at them.

  3. The image of the picture represents a lady sitting nearby dinning table. The background of picture is the painter who is painting a vangoh protrait, i guess. I don't think that this picture is realistic because of distorted form and colour and it does not showed light and shadow.

I like this painting because it is painted by a nice colour scheme- red yellow, green, blue, it's seem to be amusing. I also like style of painting on a lady's face. It can be seen front view and side view.
I like the pictures that are painted in Neo impressionist style like Seurat's picture. The scenes of pictures mostly are a landscape, still life. The content of painting is not complicated.

  4. I think this picture tells me that there are a model and an artist who is painting his picture. This picture is realistic, but it can still be seen what happens or where this situation occurs . I like this picture because it can make me thing and have some ideas that what activities in this picture and what the painter wants to say to the viewers. Actually, my favourite art work is The Creation of Adam because it can show me the relationship between the God and human and they always love and respect to their God.

  5. In this painting, I saw one man painting his work and a lady who sit beside him. It is implied that the man is drawing lady's picture. The drawing is not so realistic because it is more colorful than in the real life.

I quite like this picture because it is colorful and not too realistic. Realistic picture maybe good ; I like it, but too realistic picture maybe can't communicate some strong emotion like a not realistic one. But if the artwork is too unrealistic it will be impossible to comprehend the theme or the propose of an work. I don't like most of "modern" unrealistic

My favorite works of art are Brick Gothic building such as St. Mary's Church in Gdansk or Danzig (St. Mary's Church, Gdańsk,2014) because building look good when it is brick brown. I also like Neo Classic buildings ,such as the White House or Great Hall of People, brutalist buildings.

  6. In this painting, I see a man who paint his work and woman who wait for him to finish his work. I think this picture is unrealistic because face of the woman is distort and unreal.

I like the way T. F. Chen use colors to make this painting looks alive. However, i prefer realistic painting to unrealistic one. In this painting, i don't like the face of the woman because it is too unrealistic for me.

My favourite work of art is Michelangelo's Last Judgment because this painting looks realistic and it is attractively decorated. This painting shows me that Michelangelo pay attention to every detail.

  7. for the first question, i see a man painting a painting, but there are some other paintings in the background of this painting. i think there is a woman who is a model of the painting that the man is painting -- there are a lot of the word painting in my sentences LOLOL , but the face of the woman is not normal -- her left face and right face are different and a bit asymmetry, so i think that this picture is not realistic.

i feel so-so of this picture. i think this picture is fascinating; it seems a bit mysterious, but i don't understand what the painter want to convey.

my favourite work of art is the painting named The pyramid of capitalist system, and i decided to talk about this picture in my presentation last week, in listening and speaking class. if you do not know this picture you might want to see this site http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyramid_of_Capitalist_System

  8. In painting above, I see a man is painting, and a woman sitting beside him acts as a model. In my opinion, they are realistic. Although this is 2D art, I can see the depth of this painting. To illustrate this, The outside of the window, I see one person is walking on the yard. And the painter painted the dining table and the chair in 3D. Moreover,
they are sitting near the window. Therfore, the sun light must shine to the left side of the woman, which
rhe painter colored the left side face and left arm in yellow. And the shadow on the man's hair.

I love this painting. Because, I love colorful painting.

I love product design by Muji. Not only is simple, but also answers the function well.
